How To Write A Song

Okay, so technically anyone can write a song - my little brothers write them all the time, but what I hope to share with you are different ways in which you can write songs and how to go about writing them.

I've been writing songs since I was 15. Throughout my years of writing, I have changed my so-called 'strategies of structure' many a-times. The following points will explain the strategies I used and why/how I used them.

1.When I first started writing songs I would write the chorus first. This works for some people, and at the time it worked for me as well. I found it easy to build a song around a chorus rather than map it all out, verse for verse. Obviously, we tend to think of the chorus as the main part of the song - it's repeated constantly and we tend to think of it as the heart of the song.

2. As I progressed through my song writing I began to change my strategy of writing and started to name the song and build around the title itself. At times, this could be quite a challenge because not all songs 'refer' to their titles. Usually when naming a song, the title, more often than not, has a strong connection with certain lyrics - usually found in the chorus. Try this, because as I have said, it can be a challenge.

3. Now-a-days, I write my songs from start to finish. By that I mean, I write the song in the order that it's read/sung. Sometimes it can vary - on occasion I will write the verses and come back to the chorus, then name the finish product, but most of the time I tend to write the 1st verse, then the chorus, followed by the 2nd verse and if there is a 3rd verse, I write that. I very rarely name the song before it is complete.

So there you have it - 3 different ways to go about writing a song! I'm sure there are many more ways to write them but those are the 3 main ways I believe you can write a song and the 3 ways I have used in my experience. You may already have a certain way of writing them and if it works for you, good on ya! But, that being said, it's good to be open-minded with the possibility of changing your ways. Give it a go. You never know, you may end up with more quality rather than quantity, and that can be a very good thing.
