How To Write Better
69Writing can never be taught - so as most writers say. Luckily, some very good ones share some tips or general discoveries while learning on their own about how to write better. You might just find these handy:
Rule Number 1:
Write the way you talk. The more simple and precise your writing is, the more it would attract readers and reach a wider diversity of audience. Sure you would sound more expert if you use highfaluting or encyclopedia words, but you could also sound arrogant, or, people may just not understand a single thing you're talking (writing) about.
Rule Number 2:
Know your audience. If most of your readers are women, then don't focus writing about mechanics or cars. If your target audience are men, don't write about knitting. If you're associated with environmentalists, careful about subjects like training zoo animals, or taming tigers as pets. Don't dare release articles on abortion or euthanasia to a Catholic community. And so on and so forth. You get the idea.

Writing Strategies
- Read or listen to the instructions carefully.
- Write a three part composition: Introduction, Development (or Body), and Conclusion.
- Write clearly or legibly.
- Make sure to answer what is asked.
- Answer everything that is asked.
- Give concrete examples, logical explanations, and even some concise stories or accounts.
- Write in short simple sentences, preferably in active voice.
- Vary your sentence structures, but don't write too much passive voice statements.
- The main subject and main verb should be clear in each of your sentences.
- Avoid starting your sentences with conjunctions ‘because,' ‘and,' or ‘but.'
- Observe correct grammar and proper punctuation.
Try practicing on these writing topics:
- Do you think the Internet is the most important invention of the century? Why? If not, then what is? Explain.
- Should a person's current job be his or her job for life? Why? Or why not? What should be a person's standards for choosing the best job? What about job security? Doesn't that mean having a fixed job for a lifetime?
- "Life is easier today than in the past due to technology." Agree or disagree? Why? Or why not?
Rule Number 3:
Use plenty of resources. You can write something beyond your field of expertise, but only for as long as you're willing to put in more effort and research. And note that this will not only add more words to your article; Collecting sources also help you back up your writing with facts, hence gaining you more readership credibility.
Rule Number 4:
Stick to the point. Don't go beating around the bush. Here's a hint: Before starting to write, formulate a question you want to answer, and tackle all throughout your article. Keep this question in mind while writing. You can also write the title first before anything else. Make sure that your title is and remains the subject, the main topic, of your article. Don't be tempted to write down about any other far-related things that pop up your mind while writing. Rather, reserve them for your next article.
Rule Number 5:
Hook readers with your opening sentence - a question almost always work best. You can also start with a common quote. Write down your thesis statement. Better yet, summarize all your notes for your article in one single understandable sentence.
Rule Number 6:
Be creative. This means being a little more poetic or lyrical - write your article as if it flows naturally sounding like a perfect rhythm as you read it.
Rule Number 7:
Read and revise. Read your article at least two times before submission. Eliminate all grammatical errors, clarify things, or add more ideas you missed writing.
All your hard work could only either result to a drooled over masterpiece or a spat upon non-sense scribble. But don't let this stop you from writing. Just write and write and write every day. Any of these tips will be useless unless you apply them. (See for yourself if they work.) You can't possibly perfect your craft unless you practice.
