How Using White Space On Your Materials Can Make A Big Difference
56You can never have too much white space in a design. Look at Google’s home page for a good example. It couldn’t get much simpler than that, yet it’s considered good design because the white space produces a clean look. Whether online or in print, plenty of white space, or blank space, can create a great Minimalist style that appeals to the masses.
As the name implies, Minimalism describes design that is stripped down to its most basic elements. Oftentimes, using white and one other color is used in Minimalist design. Minimalist design has been influenced by Japanese design and architecture and is considered to have its roots in Modernism.
If you want your design materials—anything from a personal painting to a business flyer or brochure—to stand out, using white as a main color source can leave a big impact.
It Makes You Focus
When designing for poster printing, brochure printing or billboards with lots of white space to give it that Minimalist look, it makes you strip away all the unnecessary information and graphics. You have nothing to distract the viewer so you must choose the most important facet of your communication strategy and plainly and clearly show that in your Minimalist design. Forcing yourself to focus on a message is not only good for you, but good for the viewer who doesn’t have to wade through a lot of graphics and text to figure out what your message is.
Your brand will seem no-nonsense
Viewers will see that you are serious about your business. Instead of trying to distract viewers with graphics and text that have nothing to do with the message, you get straight to the point, which most viewers can appreciate. It shows that you know their time is valuable so you’re telling it (or showing it) as it is.
Less confusion
Complicated or cluttered design often just confuses people. When people get confused, they get frustrated. You don’t want potential customers to become frustrated with you, right? Using a Minimalist design will alleviate much, if not all, of that confusion. With only a few design elements, there isn’t much to be confused about!
Your brand will seem modern
Minimalism has its roots in Modernism, and true to this day, lots of white space looks modern. Of course, if you are advertising for a traditional furniture company with pieces that look like they came from the 1900s, a Minimalist approach won’t work. But if your company is one that epitomizes the future, Minimalist design will give the feel that your company is very modern.
Whether you want to use Minimalist design on posters or you want to have a modern catalog, using white space is the ticket to being up-to-date.
