How can mature workers find jobs?

It may prove to be difficult for mature workers to find jobs, especially in competition with newly graduated students with a wealth of job skills. Older workers are also often the victims of downsizing and flattening of the corporate structure hierarchy. What is a mature worker to do?

Before looking for a new job, do what all job seekers do first: look at your finances and decide what kind of job you'll need, then assess your skills and education and figure out what sort of position you would be qualified for.

One can attempt to catch up by acquiring some of those skills. For instance, many older people can bring themselves to par by taking computer classes and other courses of newer technologies necessary for many of today's jobs. Some agencies may even provide computer training, so it may prove helpful to take advantage of those opportunities. It's important to keep abreast of the skill sets used today.

There's nothing wrong with checking out books written to help older workers try to find jobs. Try this page for some good resources: http://www.quintcareers.com/mature_jobseekers_books.html.

And of course, there are plenty of databases with job listings specifically for mature workers. Additionally, look at government listings, job fairs, alumni college offices, professional and trade associations and unions, executive recruitment firms, and permanent and temporary staffing agencies. Choose the type of source to peruse based on what sort of job you think you'll want.

And don't forget to network! Use those connections you've made over the years. Call friends, family and acquaintances for help and news in the field you're looking at.

Remember to keep a positive attitude through all of this. There are plenty of jobs out there, so don't get discouraged if things don't work out right away! Don't look at the past, look to the future! Show you're willing to learn.

Sometimes matured workers have self-defeating attitude, that's why they find it hard to get job.

I often heard them saying that they are too old to learn.
