How did you wean your children off of the bottle? What about their pacifier?

BYE- BYE, PATSY!!

When I took my eldest child off of her bottle,it was a chore!  That's why when I had more children, I worked out a plan to make it easier.  I started at six months.  To get them off the pacifier, I started giving them teething cooking instead of the dreaded patsy.  It worked okay for the first two boys, but the third, just didn't want the thing at all.  That worked out even better.

To wean them from the bottle, I also started at six months.  I would give them a sippy cup with a soft spout in the day time and only give a bottle at night.  If they cried for a bottle in the day, I would only put water in it.  I would put juice or milk in the sippy cup.  It didn't take them long to figure out the difference.

By the time the eleventh month rolled around, I was bottle and patsy free.  I had even started mixing their formula with a little whole milk to make that transition a little easier.

Now, I know that this is something that most doctors don't recommend. but I took my last four children off bottle and formula at eleven months.  I feed them three times a day and gave them snacks to fight off any between meal hunger.

My kids were easy to wean from patsy and bottle.  Now... pottty training was a different story.  I'm on child number four and I'm still trying to work that one out.

I am not a specialist or professional in this field.  I am just a mother offering a little bit of personal experience.

I don't know why doctors don't recommend it. Bottles are supposed to increase respiratory congestions (as per medical reports). After 6-8 months it's otherwise also wise to feed the baby with some cereal formula (mixed with milk or fruit). Good topic to bring up, especially for expecting moms.

My children's pediatrician kept insisting that I not rush into weaning my children from their bottles because of some stupid stuff about them needing the full twelve months with their bottles and formula. He said that it was important to their development. Yeah Right!

When I had my first child, my daughter's pediatricain told me not to give my baby water for the first four months. After about two weeks of following this order, i noticed that my little's skin was starting to look dry and crack even though I lotioned her eveyday. I started to give her one oz. of water four times a day for a week and her skin became soft and smooth once again. She was getting dehydrated! Who says that doctors know best? I got the best advice from the older ladies in my community.
