Life is a Marathon

Diet, Feng-Shui, Exercise,Self-Realization

Many times a person will be dignosed as having cinical depression, when, in fact, he/she may really be bi-polar. It's important to realize that in either case, depression may be due to chemical imbalances in the brain, namely serotonin. This is a natural mood enhancer, but in some persons, they lack enough serotonin to remain cheerful and optimisitc in the face of adversity. About 40% of bi-polar patients are initially diagnosed as having clinical depression, according to Dr. Ghaemi. This figure may be a low estimate. This is because the symptoms of depression are much more unacceptable than the euphoric, or manic states, which are often thought of as normal, or happy states.

Now, most importantly, it is important to find a psycholgist or psychiatrist who understands you and, oftentimes, a support group will be helpful too. Even though most professionals agree that clinical depression and bipolarism are genetic, there are important modifications that you can implement in your life to boost your self-esteem.

Make sure that your living arrangements are happy. Feng-Shui is important to consider in arranging your living space, as it will contribute to peace and prosperity. I have written a short article on Feng-Shui in my Alternative Medicine blog.

I often suggest dietary changes. Foods containing the omega fatty acid oils are important for neurological health, like walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, avocados which are abundant in this oil. Bananas contain high levels of serotonin. "Whole-grain breads, crackers, pasta, rice, cereal, and fruit all have the potential to increase your serotonin level," according to Ask Yahoo. However, it is actualy tryptophan containing foods that you will want to look for, as it is this amino acid that is the actual precursor for serotonin. Obviously, you should make sure that you are getting your vitamin B's, especially B-12.

Keeping a journal is also important. If you find yourself staying up late or possibly using drugs, you may need to have another evaluation for your condition, as these are symptoms of bipolarism. The SSRI's, like Prozac, have been found to actually increase depression and suicide "a paradoxical effect," according to Natural News.

Another wonderful way of incresing your serotonin levels is exercise, especially running, as mentioned in Depression Help. It's known as a "runner's high," as endorphins are naturally secreted during a vigorous workout. Stay high forever!

Consult an astrologer. I am trained in medicine (DMD Boston University), but I am also an astrologer. I have oftentimes seen acute depressive cycles begin when a person enters a particularly difficult period (dasa) in his/her life. It is important to realize that you will have your own individualized path to follow, which may involve some material setbacks in life. However, once realized, these setbacks can lead to further spiritual growth and self-realization. By the way there are Ayurvedic remedies for such periods, such as fasting, yoga, meditation and gem therapy.

This is a very informative hub and everything you have suggested is accurate. I take 5 HTP to boost my serantonin levels as I am going through the change of life and it helps with mood swings due to hormone changes.

How wonderful! I am doing good, no hot flashes or terrible mood swings, but I do feel some changes. I wrote a hub on how some cultures do not experience the change of life.

Besides the suggestion to see an astrologer I would say all of these suggestions sound reasonable for anyone who wants to improve their mood.  I am not trying to put down astrology, but once when I was 18 I visited an astrologer with a friend and she charged us sixty dollars to tell us the future.  None of these things came to be, so honestly I cannot say that is the best use of money.  Some people actually do have the ability to see future events, but I would suggest seeing a qualified therapist or going to group therapy rather than spending money on an astrologer.  I am not saying you are not good at it because you may be an exception to the rule, but I just cannot advise everyone to do that.

Hi Sweetie Pie, sorry you had a bad experience with astrology. However, believe, me if you know what period you're in it does make a big diffeerence and it has been accepted practice in India for thousands of years

Sorry I did not mean to offend you. As I said you probably know more than some astrologers.
