How do affiliate links affect your search ranking? You're probably familiar with the term "Can-Spam"

Asking for links the old-fashioned way is simple!
Asking for links the old-fashioned way is simple!

Affiliate back links is a great way of improving your websites ranking with the search engines..if you do it the right way

When you do it the right way, the results can be amazing in regards to both increased rankings and traffic...

It's not just the site or the link text that matters, the actual page that links to your site matters, too.

Most naturally occurring inbound links point to home pages, which give them more votes in the form of credibility and power.

Receiving a link from another site's home page is more valuable than a link from an internal page, which can often contain spammer or junk affiliate links.

So does that mean its a waste of time as an affiliate marketer to be generating back links to your website?

How can affiliate links reduce your ranking with the search engines?

Search engines watch how fast new links to a site appear as a way to detect and penalize search engine spam.

If too many new links appear in too short a timeframe with identical anchor text emerge...

Red flags would be triggered and the site maybe penalized, banned or experience a sudden decline in rankings.

You really got to be careful...about which affiliate links the search engines can follow as these links influence your ranking, for better or worse.

Some affiliates may also operate as affiliates for other merchants.

They may link to everything on the same page: get rich quick scams; credit card offers; home-based business opportunities, you get the idea...

Links from these pages cover so many topics they dilute your inbound links context and that won't help your ranking.

The bottom line is link quality, not quantity, that counts, so the plan is to build cautious and go slow.

Link growth that leads to increased rankings and traffic can be realized but watch out for Link Farms.

Link farms main purpose is to generate back links to other sites within a group in order to build rankings.

But link farms...usually provide little or no useful content and this is another clue that maybe suspect or mass-manufactured...

These sites form a network, the aim is for each page to link to other pages within this group, which is seen by the search engines as spamming.

The search engines can easily identify link farms and will penalize your website for having an incoming link from a link farm!

Then you have to watch out for banned pages.

If a page has been banned and it has a back link to your website, the link can actually reduce your ranking with the search engines.

How do you find out if a website is banned by the search engines?

Tip: If you've installed the Google ToolBar, look closely at the color of the page rank indicator for the page in question.

If the page has been banned, the google page rank bar shows an empty bar which is grey in colour.

This is different from a new page with a zero page rank because the page rank bar is white in color...

Building back links to your website, in order to have a significant effect on your website ranking, your links should be from web pages that have content relevant to the content on your website.

Linking from websites on niches not related to yours will often not necessarily hurt your ranking, but it will certainly not improve...

Hi Highwaystar,

One other reason to promote your own links rather than the direct affiliate links is that programs come and go. Imagine building 1000's of links direct to an affiliate program then it closes. You have wasted all that hard work and effort! It is much better to have your own site or blog and promote that then if programs come and go and at least you can simply change your pages, which is easier than trying to change all these backlinks!

Hey Jhulot, thanks for your valuable feedback with important info...you're spot on because affiliate programs do come and go sometimes without prior notice...yes you want to promote affiliate links that are coming from your own blog or website, and you should develop your own products once you know you're on a winner!

For many affiliate advertising link, you can use javascript links which search engines do not pick up. This I found to be a great strategy for many CPA programs.

It seems though that google is not giving as much value as it used to backlinks. The algorigthms tend to change frequently these days.

Hi everyone, I'm new to all of this, and trying to promote my website without hurting it, is getting a little confusing. How can I get good backlinks? They say Google doesn't want you to buy backlinks but nobody wants to give the little guy high pr links for fear of hurting their own rankings. How can I tell if it's a good site to buy links from? I need to get my store noticed. I need sells! It has been eating money faster than I can dish it out and I've gotten 5 small sales. Not even enough to cover the cost of starting it, let alone keeping it going. I'm getting desperate!

I have noticed that my site rankings have went down when I am linking to affiliates such as Macy's etc. Why is that? Am I penalized for linking to other stores?

Steve, website rankings go up or down, so building reciprocal links doesn’t do much for you. Google kind of discounts reciprocal links. A great way to increase site rankings in the SERPs is to get social bookmarking links. Knowing how to get the right build links is very important (anchor text and links from external pages are one of 3 most important parts of Google’s ranking algorithm, comparable only to a domain’s trust or authority, determined by types and variety of a page’s links, and a page’s link popularity). Press Releases and articles are awesome. They have the potential to create tons of buzz for your website.

allgonetohebirds, firstly you don’t just want reciprocal links or to buy links from anywhere. Good backlinks start with articles and press releases. The goal of an article or press release is to generate links and as a byproduct people organically link back to you. Article syndication is basically the same as Press Release Syndication. The difference is, usually it results in more links, (it’s a bit cheaper and you don’t get as much of an instant traffic bump). Articles tend to live longer than Press releases too. Write articles for less competitive keywords as this maybe enough to get your site to the top of the SERPs!

In regards to precise anchor texts...people are used to do optimizing by using the same anchor texts for their links over and over again. Since anchor text filters are in full effect since 2006 varying your anchor texts is key. It does NOT look natural if suddenly everyone starts to link to your site, all using the same anchor text i.e. "dog training".

Google PageRank is dictated by the green bar which is not a true metric enabling you to learn more about the strength of a page. Google returns random page rank data if they feel like to just because it's fun and they like to fool us:)
