Cure Grey Hair or Cure Gray Hair

Going gray is very natural and depending on your lifestyle may creep up on you quicker than others but there are ways you can prevent going Grey including improving vitamin and mineral intake, circulation and of course avoiding stress.

The cause of graying hair is due to a substance called melanin which is responsible for bringing color to your hair. Sometimes your body does not produce enough melanin or produces less as you age. Melanin is made from the amino acid tyrosine so if a lack of melanin is the cause this could improve your situation. There is usually no need to supplement with Tyrosine as you body will produce it from protein food sources.

Prevent Grey Hair - A look at your health and lifestyle

Climate and Climate change

Where you live and what sort of climate you experience can have a great impact on your scalp and hair. I’ve had a few friends that came from Thailand and where used to very hot and humid days come over to colder parts of Australia. They told me they could immediately feel the difference and so did there scalps and hair, suddenly there hair and scalp was getting much less blood flow and circulation.

So this leads me to the topic of improving circulation to your scalp and hair. Proper circulation ensures all those nutrients you get from your food are actually transported to your hair where they are needed most.

Increasing Scalp and Hair circulation and Overall circulation

The circulation of blood around your body is very important for bringing nutrients to each organ and body part. A lack of circulation is a very common reason for graying hair and is usually an easy fix. (There’s no point eating vitamins if they have no way of reaching your scalp and hair)

- Exercise daily and try and get that blood flowing

- Massage your scalp with your fingertips (not nails) daily for 5-10 minutes, will greatly improve circulation you will feel your head heat up.

- Try a circulation improver e.g Gingko Biloba or Nitric Oxide Amino Acid ( l- arginine or citrulline malate)

- Using a hair steamer or sauna is a great circulation improver

Try a green Superfood like Spirulina

Another very common reason for graying hair is a lack of vitamins and minerals , I believe the best way to cure gray hair is to take your vitamins in a natural source and I would recommend something like Spirulina , Chlorella or any other dark green vegetable.

Organically grown spirulina has very high protein levels as well as important vitamins, minerals and amino acid’s which can help greatly in preventing grey hair. A vitamin deficiency would be the main cause for people with graying hair who are aged below 40.

Increase Protein Intake and Amino Acids

Increasing protein intake is very important to help cure grey hair and it seems that a lot of people ignore the importance of eating a moderate to high protein diet. Amino acids are broken down form protein sources and used for many different functions including skin and hair health.

The main important ones for hair and skin are L-Cystine and L-Methionine and L-Tyrosine for the production of Melanin, but of course it’s important to get all essential amino acids in order for your body to produce non essential amino acids.

Hair Treatments to Cure Grey Hair

Hair treatments are a popular way to cure gray hair , hair treatments can be done weekly or once a month or whenever you feel your hair and scalp need a bit of extra care. The easiest method would be to let your conditioner soak In for 15 – 30 minutes to really nourish your roots and cuticles. Otherwise there are many homemade hair treatments to help cure gray hair and bring life back to your hair some of these are

- Egg Shampoo, High in Amino Acids and Protein , Mix 1 egg with water and apply to hair and scalp and leave for 15 – 30 minutes before washing off with mild gentle shampoo

- Store bought protein conditioner or deep hair treatment

- Coconut Oil on the hair and scalp

- Apply curd or Yoghurt to hair and scalp

Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Stress plays a big role in how our body’s look and how we feel inside, and how we feel inside will usually reflect in some way on the outside. I know its easier said than done but take some time in your day to relax and just think about something your looking forward too J.

I find a great way to relax is to do some mediation or I sometimes sit under my hair steamer and read a book.

Very helpful tips about managing grey hair. Thank you. Does smoking increase the rate of hair becoming grey? If I apply MelanPlus Hair Growth Enhancer for Graying Hair - MENS FORMULA, can it help?

expectus profile image

expectus  says:

well smoking is terrible for your circulation and will also leave you deficient in many different minerals.

The melanplus product will definitely help if your deficient in some minerals, or not producing high enough levels of melanin as it contains l-tyrosine , also contains Chinese herbs for hair loss and saw palmetto which is also used for hair loss.

it doesn't actually say how much l-tyrosine but you could prob get the same effect taking l-tyrosine aswell as a regular multivitamin or hair & nails formula, melanplus is a oral formula but you if you want something to apply try a deep protein treatment with added vitamins and minerals for your scalp and hair.

Hi, good article. I once heard Gary Null, the famous naturopathic doctor, talk about how he reversed his graying hair naturally. He talked about how he juiced LOTS of leafy greens. I don't know specific remedies, but he said that it helped a lot. If you want to find out more, I'd check out his website or his books from the library, I'm sure it's there somewhere.

All the Best

I'll soon be 59 and can count the grey hairs in my head. I've taken spray vitamins exclusively for about 20 years and eat as nutritiously as possible. My not turning grey is not genetic because every other member of my family began to grey in their 40's. I contribute my lack of grey mainly to the Colloidal Minerals. I take the Multi, Colloidal Minerals and one other that I switch around between the C and Calcium and Omega, etc. Keeping your natural color isn't time consuming or expensive or thought provoking.

expectus profile image

expectus  says:

Mark - I'm not sure about reversing it but it could be possible and would definitely increase chances of new hair not turning grey.

thanks for the coment thilaganesh and barryrutherford, that Queensland sun is lovely but I'm sure you definitely drys your poor hair

colloidal minerals are highly concentrated usually liquid minerals coming from a natural source, usually plant, and you can get biotin pills at your local chemist just check how much your taking because your multi-vitamin probably already has biotin in it

It's not really grey! It's tin foil blonde! At least that is what my hair dresser is calling it. She said, "there is no need to fret, you're going blonde, tin foil blonde!" I laughed for days after that and realized that this stage in my life is way more better than being young, and dumb! I have earned every tin foil blonde hair on my head and proud of it! I wouldn't change a thing!

Thanks for the tips from you and those that commented!

Hi:

If the photo is of you I think you're beautiful with gray hair. I'm starting to get a few grays and it makes me mad. I'm coloring more often than I used to so I understand to a point. However, the folks that do allow their hair to go completely gray or salt and pepper usually look very attractive such as in your photo and Richard Gere, Judy Collins, and I even saw some photos of

Marilyn Monroe with white hair and she still looked amazing. I think that society has mentally screwed and skewed what we with is acceptable and what is not. This is why so many women have that "Martian look" today from too many surgeries.

Just my opinion but you look great with gray hair or another color.

I like your first phrase...'going gray is natural'. I am 55 and I don't have much gray at all, but I really believe it is because of the red in my hair. My dad is a redhead and he didn't start showing any gray until his 70's. My mom on the other hand, had black hair and she started going gray in her 30's. But even if I was more gray, I would never dye it like most of my friends do. Like you said...going gray is natural. Besides, I have earned every gray hair I have! : )

chermarie profile image

chermarie  says:

Since I'm a natural blonde, the grey doesn't show up as much, but it definitely is there. The grey ones come in coarser than my thin blonde hair. I think I'll give some of your suggestions a try. Taking more vitamins & minerals can help..also addressing the intestinal tract is helpful so that we can absorb those nutrients and water as well. Supplying the system with probiotics and fiber will address the integrity of the digestive system.

Thanks for this informative Hub!

Why would you? Aging gracefully is very attractive in women as well as men. I don't suggest hair dye, it is poison and your skin is porous...studies show some danger. I don't suggest purple, green or blue for any mature women. It's scary!

expectus profile image

expectus  says:

Chermarie - thats true probiotics can help a lot ,I used to love eating natural yoghurt with blueberries and wheat germ :)

Roberti - It's not uncommon to go grey early but you should try some spirulina or something like that to see if that helps? and if your in a cold climate try sauna's or something to improve circulation

gandalfthegrey - very wise gandalf and yes purple looks especially scary when the light hits it :P

I am really impressed with your article expectus. I have been graying for some time, but I have chosen not to dye my hair. Society makes you think you have committed the worse crime when you don't, but I am learning to accept that I am growing older and wiser.

It is good to have a natural alternative to reduce or prevent graying. I am glad that this hub shows how it can be done naturally. The advantage of a natural method is there is an added benefit of good general health.

You have inspired me to write a hub on how to go gray gracefully. Thank you for your great contribution to hubpages.

Thank you for the article. I also think nutrition and vitamins will help many health issues. If people would spend more time on good nutrition and health supplements and less on things that are unhealthy like alcohol and substance abuse and unhealthy lifestyles, many of their problems would probably disappear.

I also think it is lack of circulation that causes people's hair to turn gray. Imagine if the whole body is doing what the scalp is doing - or that is, no circulation anywhere as we age.

I will try some of your suggestions and see if they help.
