How do you compete with other more experienced writers when you're just starting out?

As always, I can only speak from my own perspective. Writing is not, or at least should not be, a competitive sport. Each writer should strive to develop his or her own interests and style and grow from there. Write what's on your mind, write using language that you feel comfortable with. If your writing appeals to others then they will read your work and you may find success in that way.

If you want to appeal to a specific audience then find a writer or type of writing that already appeals to that audience and learn to emulate it. There is the simple fact, however, that your writing still may not appeal to others and there may not be anything you can do about that.

First and foremost I believe you should write for yourself. If you can become happy with your own work, then you can share it with others. Once you share it with others you can tweak it in the hopes that you'll appeal to a larger audience and with luck, you'll find success.

If you're looking to break in to the business as a professional who will earn most or all of your income from your work, well, I'm not one and I wouldn't have a clue.

If you're looking to make money on Hubs, I still would not consider it a competition. I would, however, look more for information on marketing and increasing hit counts which really can be dealt with seperately from the writing itself.

I'm sure I didn't help, but I mean well :).
