Here are a few quick tips to help you save on your grocery bill:

Home brand products

Are you one of those people who won't buy home brand products because you think they just won't be as good as the brand name products? I was for a long time and then when I left work to have a baby and we became a one income family I decided to give home brand a go. Did you know that many home brand products are actually made by the big brand name companies? True! Many of them are made by the big brand name companies and are just packaged differently. I admit there are a few home brand products that I don't like but the majority are just fine and now I have home brand products in my trolley every week.

Buy in bulk

If you can buy items in bulk. Although it is more expensive at the time of making the purchase it will work out less expensive in the long run. With fresh food only buy in bulk if you know that you will use it before it goes bad.

Coupons

Are you one of those people who won't use coupons because you are too embarrassed to? Sometimes you need to swallow your pride because using coupons may actually save you hundreds of dollars every year.

Write a list

Before you go shopping write yourself a list and stick to the list. There will probably be a couple of items you will forget to write on the list and that is fine but try not to buy too many items that you don't have on the list. Impulse buying is a big way that people will spend more than they need to so if you go into the store determined to stick to your list then you won't impulse buy.

Don't shop when you are hungry

Again you want to avoid impulse shopping and if you go shopping when you are hungry then you are going to look at food in a different way and may think you need more than you actually do.

Plan your meals

By planning your meals for the week you will know exactly what food you need to buy. It can be a real pain getting into the habit of pre-planning your meals but once you get into that habit it does make life easier in the long term. It will also save you money as you won't go shopping and just buy a heap of groceries and then throwing half of it away at the end of the week when it hasn't been used. Plan your meals; know exactly what food you need to buy.

Freeze a bargain

Many foods can be frozen so if you have a good size freezer then make the most of it. If food is being sold at a bargain price then grab it and freeze it. There are many foods that can be frozen including cheese and eggs - although most people don't know that, so if you find a bargain freeze it.

Fresh is best

Prepared foods are much more expensive than buying raw ingredients and making your own. I know that prepared foods are so much easier and convenient but they are at a price. Fresh food is much better for you and when you make your own foods you know that they are not full of preservatives. This is true also for baby food it is much cheaper to cook up vegies and puree fruit yourself than to buy baby food in jars.

Leave the kids at home

Taking kids shopping is a guarantee that you will buy more than you intended. Kids will want everything they see and supermarkets are great at putting all the tempting items right in view of the kids. It's usually a nightmare taking the kids shopping anyway, so save yourself some money and your sanity by leaving them home with Dad.

Stock up - carefully

I mentioned earlier in this report not to buy things just because they are on sale. However, if there is an item that you use on a regular basis and it is on sale then stock up on it. If it is something that you know will get used then grab it and if it's really cheap then grab a few. But just be careful not to get carried away and buy things that you don't really need - only buy what you know will definitely be used and is a great bargain.
