How to Work with a Difficult Boss

How to Deal with a Difficult Boss

How do you deal with a difficult boss and get promoted. You may just get a promotion if you deal with the difficult boss satisfactorily. The question is quite vague and situations have to be clarified in each scenario in a so called hostile environment.

One important question is what do you consider a difficult boss? Are you saying your boss is difficult because you are not allowed to walk into work late every morning. Are you saying the boss is difficult because you think your performance rating should have been higher. Are You saying the boss is difficult because you think the boss just does not like you?

If you noticed each one of these question asked your opinion of what is a difficult boss. After considering the three factors of tardiness or attendance, unfair treatment or personality conflicts, the ball is in the bosses corner. The boss has the power and has the authority to keep the office running smoothly. The office agenda may not always fit in with what you conceive as fair and understanding but you must understand that the boss has to answer to someone also.

If you do find that your boss is needlessly nick picking about your work then your performance has to be your focus. You must learn to listen to criticism and do your best work so that there is no room for error. If you absolutely do not like the boss, then you have to learn to respect the position and look at the criticism from the office from which the boss works.

You deal with a difficult boss by showing empathy and stepping in her shoes and do not take her interruption to your work as meddling. You know that you should not have stopped by McDonald's that close to working start times, but you did anyway and hoped to make up the time with maybe increasing your driving speed by a few miles per hour. Each choice that you make that is not a good choice seemingly comes back especially when it concerns work. Do not give the difficult boss anything to talk to you about except the good work that you are doing.

Remember that bosses are authority figures and should be respected as such. If you have the unfortunate experience of getting a driving ticket and have to go to court, the judge always asks the officer about your behavior. In an office situation or work situation, you want to put your best Sunday school behavior on because the boss is looking at your attitude and performance daily. The performance rating is not the once a month office meeting that he or she pulls you in to rate your work. The performance period is everyday that you walk into the office on time and commence to do the work that you are paid to do.

It is said that attitude is everything. Keep your attitude in check and the difficult boss will notice a positive change in you and your production at work will improve as well. You can control your attitude, you can not control the boss and that is not your job. Your job is to just do your job.

You are not the only person with the difficult boss, there are other employees in the company. If the boss is difficult and it is a known fact that the boss is difficult, make it your mission to be one of the few to not be in disagreement with he or she and to go the extra mile when given a task to do. Do not do the bare minimum, do more and when you work harder, perform so that you are pleased with a job well done. If you look for praise from a difficult boss, you may be dissapointed and it is not her job to please you or to make you happy. Her job is to manage employees for the optimal benefit to the company.

Deal with the difficult boss with an attitude that she is not difficult at all but that maybe there is something the you can do to make the day go by more smoothly and productively for the two of you. So remember, no stopping at McDonalds, no backtalking the boss about what she has on, and positively do not join in the gossip. Just do your job.
