This is a good question, considering I am new at this website myself. In my own opinion though, I think the best way to get involved on hubpages and be a good contributor is to really write about what you know, and also what people are really looking for and want to learn or know about.

You should always post subjects you know about, because your getting your knowledge out there and helping people out, and for me its a since of release and knowing that I really did help someone. Then I also got to thinking, why not think of a topic you don't know to much about, research it, and then write about it. That way your learning something, writing about something different, and helping out more people.

This site is a great way to communicate, and its also a great site to learn and give advice, as I am doing right now. This is something that I've always dreamt of doing and now I have found a site to do it on. So all you hubbers out there, write about what ya know, even what you don't know, and make this an awesome community to write and and meet friends in.
