How do you go about getting a song/lyrics into the right hands? Copyrighting?
60You can do it yourself
My husband and I filed a copyright on a compilation "album" of all of his original songs. see this link at the Library of Congress' copyright office. You don't have to go through an agency an pay their fee to file. It's really easy. http://copyright.gov.
Here's what we did. My husband recorded a collection of his current work onto an audio tape, and I typed out all of the lyrics and guitar tabs; we mailed everything together as one item. At that time you could do compilations, I"m not sure if you can still do it that way but I would try. It can be very expensive to copyright each individual song. If you have the capability you should also make a CD of your work instead of a tape.
One more step to take is to mail yourself a copy of your songs through the US mail service and leave unopened when you receive it back. This is called the "poor-man's copyright" Songwriters are able to prove ownership by the date on the "postal date stamp" even in a court of law.
Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

Thanks again you two for the responses. I actually only have lyrics written, but i'm sure the process is the same.

Actually, the Poor Man's Copyright no longer has strong support in the courts anymore. Years ago, it was a common way to "bypass" official copyrighting, but because of all the fraud that has happened in mulitple industries, courts need really strong evidence to support any copyright claims.
