Revelations?

The book of Revelations is as much talked about as Jesus Christ.  Everyone has their own view and opinion on the last book in the bible.  I have of course my own view.  As a child the book was actually used as a scare method, if you don't behave then you will be cast aside when Jesus comes back.  At one point I was so scared I had bad dreams of the clouds forming up as angels and the world ending.  Forget Dracula or the Boogie man, Jesus Christ was much more terrifying.  Of course throughout my aging I have studied the bible and other religious books and religions themselves.  Currently the History channel, Discovery, and of course pbs and NOVA have done many shows on the subject.  Some claims stating it was written by a crazed man locked in a tower!

I have personally stayed away from the topic and am much more concerned with current environmental and human issues to worry about something that I don't even believe.  At least once or maybe twice a year I'll go back to the book and do a brief runthrough of Revelations.  Just like the rest I have to look at the motives behind it and the time it was written.

The Catholic church taught us that this was written by the Apostle John when he was banished to the Isle of Patmos by the emperor Domitian.  They believe that it was not written during Nero's time because of the 7 church's maturity and the fact that Nero did not banish people.  So here we go again on not a clue about author or time period.  One of the things that hinders my belief in the bible is lack of proof on anything.  Word of mouth being spread around by not the most intelligent of people can lead to many fish stories and the size enlarging drastically.  I regress.

During the time of the writing of the book the world was in a horrible state of affairs.  To me this was written as a form of propaganda, a way to motivate the people and give them hope that the Roman empire would soon fall.  It is also a way to keep people in line, to continue following the message and you will be saved.

I don't believe in the bible or any of it's history.  I believe that history is written by the winners and especially the old testament as a way to justify destroying and killing many, many people.  To me Revelations is another way to control and scare the believers into not delving to deep.  To keep the faith or this will happen to you.  The likes of Nostradomos and the rest of the "visionaries" made their predictions because of the material they had to work with.  Wars, earthquakes, etc. are always going to happen, this is not hard to predict.  References to 911 are now beening said were "predicted".  Instead of 2000, it's now Dec. 12-21 2012 for the end of the world!  The apostles were also afraid of the end, and Jesus told them that only the father knows.  To try and figure out the end was considered a sin.

I'm not that concerned with the calendar of the Incans because they couldn't predict their own demise, let alone the end of time.  Christians shouldn't worry about it either.  One, it's a sin.  Two, they would be following another god, also a sin.  Three, do the time line.  How long will it take to rebuild the Temple?  Even if someone destroyed the Rock and tamed the Muslims into letting them rebuild, which will take many years alone, how long even with current technology would that take?  We also need the 2 nearly indestructable men, the war, the beast chasing the woman for at least 3 years, etc, etc, etc.  We go way past 2012!

To me Revelations was either a really bad dream, written by a crazy man, or written by a very cunning person with a very bad agenda.  Either way, I do not accept any of it, nor will I.

The addition B of R to the canon was probably the worst decision in the history of Christianity. Its pernicious influence has been particularly virulent lately but it is the worm at the heart of the apple.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Everytime I see a new post I hold my breath and prepare for the bashing. I am thinking about a series and going from chapter to chapter. After studying for years I think that some true portrayals of the battles and POLITICS should be exposed. Everyone keep on THINKING and thanks again.

Andy- You have given your personal take. Some times the people who spread the message do a bad job but that shouldn't make the message bad. I personally feel Jesus was great and had a lot to share with the world as far as being kind & loving to others. Anyway I still respect your views since they come from your experiences in life and hope you didn't feel bad about my observations. Have a great day.

Thanks country! No I don't feel bad and am happy that you have great relationship with Jesus. I believe everyone should be happy with what ever they choose and that no-one should interfere with those beliefs. How could I be offended by your opinions? They are yours and mine are mine, I believe the problem with religions/politics etc. is that people try to force their opinions/views on others. That's when the problems start. I'm glad your here and I shall be visiting your sites as well. Thanks again.

Andy,

You are correct, the bible was written by men for men and interpreted by men. I said men and not man.

There must have been something wrong with the Old Testament to have a need for the New Testament.

Hello Andy,

You do have an open mind. The road to heaven is narrow. You must believe. Romans 9:9-10. Anyone that denies me(God) also denies my son (Jesus). He will by no way enter the gates of heaven. I too will deny him.

With that being said, say there is a God and I am right. At your last breath on this planet you think, what if believers are right?. Would you rather go to heaven or hell? Say we are right and your theory is not.

For me I  would take the risk and invite Jesus into my heart, I would say his name and ask forgiveness. I would get to heaven. Whew made it.   Would you deny the free ticket to the light or go by choice to the dark? You must believe in something for you to write information about it. Yes, heaven or Hell ?  We are talking about eternity. I would not take the chance just in case the Bible is true and  believers will be the only residents in Heaven. Just think about this. If there is a God, there must be a devil.

What would you choose for eternal life? God already paid the price for you. He sent his only son to die for you and I. If I am right and you are not what would you do? Think about it. (you can not get out once you are there)

Do not say no one told you. I am a believer and I know where I am going when I dye. Heaven. I have no fear. I am excited. I will do as much good and Love as much as I possibly can until I am called home. I am a long shot from perfect but I do not need to be. The price was paid on the CROSS.

Love never fails.( 1st Corinthions BIBLE) Light always puts out the dark. My mansion awaits me. I am in the light.

Do not give any more room for the enemy Adam. He is a liar and thief. He wants you to believe his lies. He is the master of confusion.  It is simple. Just read Romans (yes the BIBLE) chapeter 9 verse nine and ten.

I will pray for you.In his Name, Jesus.

With Love, Patti

Patti, thank you for your comment. I have been around God and after many years in Catholic school, an FCA leader, and a intense student of religion I have made my choice. Science holds more dear to my heart than a God. I read the bible as well as almost every book written about Christ and religion more than active followers of any church. I'm a student and like most looking for the truth. I am very glad that you have your faith and trust that you will hold true. I will also hold true to my beliefs, and if your god does exist then I can at least stand tall knowing that I followed my course, lived a good life, and was not a hypocrite. It was my constant and still intense study and search that turned me away from believing in a God. As well as seeing the followers of all religions. And trust me, I completely know what will happen if I am wrong. That is what makes my beliefs that much more valid to me.
