Signs of dehydration

Dehydration can lead to very serious medical problems even death. Young children and elderly are particularly vulnerable to medical complications from dehydration as well as persons with certain illnesses or taking medications.

Some common signs of dehydration include:

  • dry mouth
  • decreased urination
  • dry skin/hair
  • muscle cramps/spasms
  • fatigue/weakness

Some causes of dehydration are:

  • hot weather
  • insufficient fluid intake
  • malnourishment
  • vomiting/diarrhea
  • viruses (rotovirus is common to young children)
  • fever
  • exercise/exhertion

If untreated, dehydration can cause cardiac disturbances, renal failure, and death. Know the symptoms and treat it early. Maintain adequate fluid intake at all times and if serverely dehydrated, do visit an emergency room for treatment before serious medical side effects occur.
