Gold when extracted from the earth is not in the pure form and hence cannot be used to make the gold products like jewelrt etc. Several other metals are mixed with the pure gold and it is need to carry on a gold refining process to get the pure gold. Here is the simple and common method that is used to extract the pure gold from impure gold.

The process is called the cuppelation process. In this process, the gold is mixed in a solution containing the lead. The solution is heated up till all the solid impure gold is converted into the liquid form. Now the solution contains all the materials separated in the liquid form. The lead plays a vital role. Lead have the property to absorb the gold. So, all the gold is absorbed and dissolved in the lead. After this process the lead is taken out of the solution and is oxidized to free up the absorbed gold.

In this way the pure gold is separated from the impure and crude gold. This process is only usefull when you have only small amount of gold to purify. For huge amount of gold, other methods are used.
