Christmas Celebration in Ukraine

Christmas is such a warm family holiday almost everywhere in the world. But interestingly enough Ukraine and other Russian speaking countries don't have such an attached feeling to it. Everyone enjoys Christmas (25th of December) movies and songs that time but actual celebration is only at New Year Eve.One of the reasons is that New Year is the first holiday to celebrate as our Chistmas is the 7th of January.

Anyway it is a great holiday and families have a special meal. It is a mix of whole grain barley, mashed poppy seeds with sugar, raisins and walnuts as option, and sweetened water with honey or other syrup. It is definitely an energy booster!

This day God fathers and mothers supposed to give gifts and money ;) and some of them still do.

As far as I live abroad, I love celebrating both Christmases. It is not a specific date which brings joy and happiness but a collective mood and celebration.

Merry Christmas to all of you!!!

That is a wonderful article and I did not realize that it was celebrated at different times, nor did I realize that there was a unique traditional meal. I have to try it. Thank you for writing the article and sharing this warm and fuzzy information.:)

Hi Oxi-z, It's interesting to learn how people celebrate Christmas in other lands. Do you celebrate Christmas on 7th of January because of the Magi Kings?

Well I think it is because of the Grygorian calendar. But I am not sure about it. At the end of the day, the idea of Christmas is always the same :)

I have friends in Spain who celebrate on January 6th which is known as Twelfth Night here, and is traditionally the day that the Magi Kings arrived bearing Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. That's why I wondered.

Very interesting! So Ukraine is not the only country with later Christmas celebration :)
