How often should you wash your hair? It is so hard to take care of our hair these days, with all the products available and all the pollution it's a wonder our hair isn't falling out all over the streets. Everybody has a different hair type but there are some basic rules to live by. In order to maintain a health head of hair and a healthy scalp it i important to wash out the dirt and build up, dead skin cells, oils produced by skin glands, and any other substances you put in your hair such as hair spray, etc.

Now, how often you wash your hair depends on two things, the type of hair you have and how often you use products such as gels, hair sprays etc. For dry hair you should wash it only a couple of times a week to help produce natural oils. For very oily hair you should wash everyday to every other day. If you do choose to wash your hair daily, make sure that you are using a pH-balanced shampoo and only wash it once. If you wash it more than once a day, you will be removing too much of the natural oil found in hair.

Here are some guidelines for choosing a shampoo for your particular type of hair:

  • Damaged or fine hair: Use protein shampoo labeled substantive protein. Shampoo should be more than mildly acidic. Or you can rinse your hair following shampoo with white vinegar and water, or lemon and water. This acid rinse will help to restore a smooth cuticle and shine to your hair.
  • Healthy hair: Regular protein shampoos are fine. Blondes might try a chamomile shampoo, which has mild bleaching properties. Brunettes might use a henna shampoo, which has mild reddening properties.
  • Oily hair: Use a lemon based shampoo.
  • All types: Jojoba based shampoo is successful in treating scalp conditions as well as dissolving sebum build up. It leaves your hair clean and shining.

A few other tips..........

To keep hair healthy and shinny eat good healthy foods, don't colour if you don't have too, at least not often. Read the labels of the products you use, try different

products you may find something better. Get a trim every month and wear a hat when out in the sun, don't wash too much, but don't forget to wash at all....I hope this has helped you and answered the question, how often should you wash your hair....

Hair and scalp experts will tell you every other day, but few people do that. Most of us wash our hair every day when we shower - which can dry it out. So, use a two-in-one shampoo/conditioner.

What about curly haired girls? Well for really curly hair, you have to use a deep conditioner everyday! So when you shower don't shapoo, but get it wet and use conditioner, but wash it out really well and then apply a little more conditioner after you shower to the ends of your hair.

Don't use a hair dryer ever! And when towel drying don't rub your hair until it is dry, just dry enough so you aren't dripping water everywhere and down your back, and don't use alcohol based syling products, they're really bad on your hair.

Silicon based anit frizz treatments work really well, be generous, but not too generous. Apply to wet hair and let it dry and don't brush it out, unless you plan to put it back up in a warm towel for a little, which works out really good.

Ok, I am hijacking your hub sorry. There is never any info. for curly hair. I have curly, curly hair.

I wash my hair only once per week.I think it is a cultural thing because most Black people do not wash their hair every day and our hair remains thick and lustrous well into old age. I was told as a child that washing the hair too often robs it of its natural oils and I am inclined to believe that. However, it probably does apply to the type of hair one has. Great post.

Great hub! I have baby fine hair, but lots of it and I used to always wash my hair everyday. I worked for a beauty supply store for 2 years and still washed everyday, even though, almost nearly everyone I came into contact with said it was best to wash every other day, especially since my hair was so fine. Only recently did I start taking their advice lol. I love being able to wash every other day. Definitely a time saver. I bleach my hair once a month [only the roots] and I go to a professional salon, so as not to damage my hair. I am going to take your advice on the chamomile shampoo! That sounds awesome.

I agree, less is more, with hair. I have very long and fine hair, and I wash it about 3 times a fortnight, never dye or blow-dry, and that way it stays shiny and healthy.
