Learning To Deal With Not Getting Your Own Way

We learned as infants fresh from the womb how to get what we wanted. If we were hungry, we cried. If we were dirty, we cried. We almost always got what we wanted. Our needs were met and we were happy. As we began our journey through the life stages, we learned that we would needed to use words to ask for our wants. We soon learned that even stomping our feet and throwing a fit had no effect on securing our wants!

We soon began school and learned that we were not the center of our world. There were other children who got what we wanted! What was happening we thought? We were learning to share in our world. We were maturating at just the right speed.

As we grew older, we learned that we were not entitled to everything we wanted. Many times we would have to do without or even share our wants with others. Marriage rings a rather large bell in the world of not getting what we want all the time!

This was maturity. Most of the time, maturity occurs naturally and we beome responsible adults. Unfortunately, there are some who never mature. They become abusers, stealing for their needs, or even takers of lives. What about the ones who are mentally ill? Some become like Cho-Seung-Hui. They get what they want through mass killings. Remember, he is the one who killed the students and faculty at Virginia Tech!

Accepting the fact that you can not always get what you want is learned through life and the maturity process. After all, challenges about how too get what you want lead to critical thinking skills and lead you to different paths of how to actually and finally get your needs met. Like the song lyrics from the Simon and Garfunkel song goes "find a new plan Stan"!
