Can it Really Be Done?
That is the burning question. The answer is that many people go about it backwards. What do I mean by that? Read on...
There is an impulse in some people to want money without having to work for it. To be fair, for some this comes out of the desire to relieve themselves from the stress of constant worry about money, or job security.
So can you actually make money online? Can a person make money through some scheme on the Internet, without working?
Good question. As with most questions the answer is, It depends.
It depends on a person's situation, for a start. I suspect that a lot of the Internet gurus making money online have money to invest in products that help them to make money online!
The pivotal point for me, the burning issue is, can you make money online without working for that money?
Well, this to means seems a little unlikely. But then, on the other hand, it depends how you define work.
The number one theme that comes up over and over again in my research is the fact that the Internet is the Information Superhighway. Therefore if you're on the Internet, you'd better be in the information game in some way.
The other thing is that you should focus on something you are interested in. Whether online or offline, whether you make money or not, an activity that is going to occupy your time had better be one that is occupying to you.
So, these are the two key things. The Internet is about content, about information. If you're not producing content, it is going to be difficult to make money online.
Whether you consider this work is a question of the second issue -- are you focusing on something you enjoy. If you want to make money online you will need to invest time (or money -- time, or money, these are the two avenues...)
If it's going to be time you invest to make money, you had better enjoy the content that you are going to produce, because trying to make money online without producing information for the Information Superhighway may make you penniless.

Ok, now we're good I guess :-)
You do have to invest something to make money! I suppose everyone wants to make money without having to do anything....but you really can't!
There's effective use of time and ineffective use of time. People can make money using their time and talents effectively. Will you make money without working for it? No, but can you make money in new and different ways than in the past? I think that you can, but whether or not you make enough to stop working outside the house, or in a 9-5 job, well, that remains to be seen.
I've only been at this a few days, so I have yet to see the fat checks rolling in. Also, I am not holding my breath in hopes of gaining millions. But if I come out a few bucks ahead, then that's a start. Maybe I can work this Internet gig into a money making proposition, but I believe it will take a lot of work!
You hit the nail on the head Chef Jeff. It is not a question of not doing anything for the money, but of perhaps finding new and unthought-of ways.
As for working at home, I have been working from home for a while and I would have to say that number one issue there is whether you can get some peace and quiet to concentrate at home! (Mind you, maybe that's true for some places of work, too!)
