That is the burning question. The answer is that many people go about it backwards. What do I mean by that? Read on...
There is an impulse in some people to want money without having to work for it. To be fair, for some this comes out of the desire to relieve themselves from the stress of constant worry about money, or job security.
So can you actually make money online? Can a person make money through some scheme on the Internet, without working?
Good question. As with most questions the answer is, It depends.
It depends on a person's situation, for a start. I suspect that a lot of the Internet gurus making money online have money to invest in products that help them to make money online!
The pivotal point for me, the burning issue is, can you make money online without working for that money?
Well, this to means seems a little unlikely. But then, on the other hand, it depends how you define work.
The number one theme that comes up over and over again in my research is the fact that the Internet is the Information Superhighway. Therefore if you're on the Internet, you'd better be in the information game in some way.
The other thing is that you should focus on something you are interested in. Whether online or offline, whether you make money or not, an activity that is going to occupy your time had better be one that is occupying to you.
So, these are the two key things. The Internet is about content, about information. If you're not producing content, it is going to be difficult to make money online.
Whether you consider this work is a question of the second issue -- are you focusing on something you enjoy. If you want to make money online you will need to invest time (or money -- time, or money, these are the two avenues...)
If it's going to be time you invest to make money, you had better enjoy the content that you are going to produce, because trying to make money online without producing information for the Information Superhighway may make you penniless.

You do have to invest something to make money! I suppose everyone wants to make money without having to do anything....but you really can't!
There's effective use of time and ineffective use of time. People can make money using their time and talents effectively. Will you make money without working for it? No, but can you make money in new and different ways than in the past? I think that you can, but whether or not you make enough to stop working outside the house, or in a 9-5 job, well, that remains to be seen.
I've only been at this a few days, so I have yet to see the fat checks rolling in. Also, I am not holding my breath in hopes of gaining millions. But if I come out a few bucks ahead, then that's a start. Maybe I can work this Internet gig into a money making proposition, but I believe it will take a lot of work!
You hit the nail on the head Chef Jeff. It is not a question of not doing anything for the money, but of perhaps finding new and unthought-of ways.
As for working at home, I have been working from home for a while and I would have to say that number one issue there is whether you can get some peace and quiet to concentrate at home! (Mind you, maybe that's true for some places of work, too!)

I am making money online but it takes several things: time, money and understanding spouse, eh?
First started a website regarding hosiery fashion in public with membership, G rated. Then added FREE blogs with google adsense, four total so far and those take in over $100 month. From learning on how to market online, ready for two big sites after learning the postive/negatives of business.
If you have the money, you can cut down the learning curve, if you do it spending as little as possible, then it will take couple of years to learn as you go.
Becoming a Big Time Marketing Guru will not happen, but finding your special niche you are an authority in and focusing on it, will bring you rewards financially.
Great hub. So many people believe in the get rich quick schemes that are floating around the internet these days. There is a lot of $$$ to be made in IM but as you say, it does take work.
It takes work, yes, but as long as you love it- it certainly doesn't feel like work! I've willingly stayed up late. The word "work" is often associated with "not liking what you do" - but the work is fun for me so it doesn't even feel like working. Great hub!

Good Hub,for me its not if I want to,I have to.I had a bad accident in 2001,and up till a couple years ago,I was still able to have a normal job.But two years ago,my leg started to go,so pretty much working from home is my only option.As of today 12-07-08 I have not found anything real,all I find is people that say,they can make me Million,but they still want twenty dollars from me.So if anyone knows of a real job,where I dont need to pay to make money,please let me know.Thanks
jamieinenglewood , Just in response to wanting something where you can work from home without paying any money. It is very hard to find good opportunities online that are free. Just think about it for a second, if you are getting an opportunity for free how is it going to fund itself? There are many things you can do online that require a small amount of money. I am part of several affiliate programs, most of which are "free". However you still have to have good advertising to make them work and the only way to get good advertising that will drive people towards your site and make you money is to pay for it. This is where a lot of people do go wrong. They want the opportunity and the lifestyle to work from home but a lot of people aren't prepared to put in the money and the time that goes with it. Don't give up hope though of finding something online because they do exist and I am living proof of that. Just remember you have to spend some money to make some money. Sure there are free programs you can join like filling in surveys and things like that, but generally you can't make a good enough income to support yourself without having to have a job to go to as well.

What I found out about making money online is that if you do have a blog or site with adsense, affiliate links or downloadable ebooks, getting traffic is possible by using forums, article marketing, email marketing, adwords, traffic exchanges, safelists, solo ads, blog posts, paid to chat sites and much more, but traffic does not always equal conversion, and it really takes getting click thru and sales in order to make money.
A person can work hard online, and get lots of traffic to their site or blog, and even get people to opt-in to their lists, but the key is getting paying customers, a targeted audience and repeat... residual income, in order to really make a success online.

Nice hub! And i totally agree with you. There is ways to make money free online, you just have to know how to do it and its all about MARKETING. Reaching the audience, building a list, thats were your money is. I hate people who call these systems or programs scams, these are people who think that cash comes from doing nothing.........
