How to Add Panache to a Home with White Walls
68
White walls are not necessarily boring walls; rather, they can provide a backdrop for vibrant color, stylish pattern and interesting textures. Mix white with neutrals and you create a pure, serene space. Shades of white can be layered to create a sophisticated interplay of nuance and texture, or white can be paired with any other color or combination of colors to create a striking modern vibe.
Neutral and Calm
With white walls as your backdrop, use shades of taupe, grey or beige to carry a soothing neutral palette from room to room. The neutrality of color will let inherent features of materials stand out while subtle gradations in color add sophistication and nuance that can be underscored with a variety of textures. For instance, juxtapose smooth silks with tufted chenille or sleek wood with tumbled stone. Keep wall décor in the same color group but with a little bit of an edge; bronze metal art or a chunky stone wall sculpture flecked with bits of crystal add dimension. A large artwork over a full size piece of furniture will make a striking focal point without extraneous embellishments.
Ground the room with a deep tone in hardwood floors, deep colored carpeting or bold area rug with shades of charcoal, chocolate and espresso. Use lighting to add softness and warmth: A flickering fireplace and the glow from table lamps, wall sconces, candles and textured lanterns of paper or bamboo will bring in additional layers of texture bathed in ambient light.
Contemporary Sophistication
White walls also provide a perfect setting for a monochromatic modern decorative scheme. Emphasize the restrained palette with tone-on-tone furnishings and accessories in modulating steps of the same color. Picture shades of white and dove grey merging in sophisticated harmony in the living room: White walls, blends with fog gray low pile carpet and a low arm couch offset by silver metallic trim woven into fabrics and acting as a frame for the coffee table. Teal brings a burst of color throughout the space in a lacquered tray, a trio of contemporary sculptures and throw pillows.
Juicy Eye-Catching Color
White works with any other color, so if color appeals to you bring in tantalizing juicy colors like tangerine, jade and lemon yellow that grab all the attention. Because of the power of such strong colors, use them intentionally: Place them where you want to create interest and repeat them throughout the home for a sense of intended design.
Another option against white is to use shades of the same color: A living room with white walls, carpet and furniture could feature throw pillows ranging from barely coral to tangerine, with those same colors being found again in a glass vase, picture frames and canvas artwork.
Classic Black and White
Bring in black furniture and your white walls gain the definition of a modern silhouette. Repeat the black in accessories, side tables, wrought iron decor, and frames surrounding black and white photographs. Play white against black and visa-versa in a mix of modern geometric or organic patterns to add variety and interest. One hot accent color, such as red or turquoise, will easily kick up the drama and wow factor.
