Handbag styles come and go, and 2009 is no exception. A stylish handbag makes a statement, and adds interest to your entire ensemble. So what are the big purse trends of 2009? This year's arm-candy consists of large tote style and oversized hobo bags, exotic skin and animal print handbags, multi-colored bags, multi-compartment bags, and vibrant colored purses.

HANDBAG STYLE TRENDS:

• While the large tote style and oversized hobo bag is perfect for the woman who carries everything, they may appear bulky and overwhelming for small framed women, however, they do look great! Traditionally, a tote bag does not have a top closure, although many of today's totes do have the ability to close allowing for added security . A hobo bag can either be slouchy or structured - it's up to you to decide which is better for your taste.
• Exotoc skin and animal print handbags are in big demand this season. Available in fine leather skins or embossed prints, they come in metalic hues, luxiourius leather, or patent leather. Weather you want a bag that is entirely animal print or want a simple look with exotic skin trim, this trend in handbags adds the special flair to your look.
• Multi colored bags, such as black/white, camel/black, navy/white, chocolate/black are another hot trend. Allowing the flexibility to blend with a variety of outfits, the handbag is the staple that pulls it all together.
• Handbags containing multiple compartments will never go out of style, in my opinion. With the necessity to have a cell phone and lipstick within easy reach, a variety of compartments is vital. To add a little twist this year, compartments in different shapes and sizes add special interest to the handbag.
• Extra "flash" is a big trend on handbags this year. Exposed zippers on external pockets, large oversized rings attaching straps and handles to the bag, and metal closures are a few examples.

• Vibrant colored handbags are especially hot this year.  In shades of pink, yellow, orange and green, your colorful bag will be the focus of your outfit by adding that exciting pop of color. Orange and Purple are the big trends in vibrant colors...why not add either one of these colors to your outfit?
• Patent leather has been around for a while, but it seems to be taking a bolder niche in the handbag trend. While the true patent leather cost more than you wish to spend, patnet "leatherette" is a very cost effective alternative.  This style definately makes a statement.
• Straw and Raffia bags are not just for summer. In the right color, this material can work all year long.

TIPS TO SELECTING THE RIGHT HANDBAG:

• Take into consideration where the bag falls when carried. With shoulder bags making a come-back, consider where it hangs as this will be where a person's eyes "land" when they first notice you.
• If you are short, consider a vertical rectangular bag, such as a messenger bag. This will give the illusion of height.
• If you are tall and thin, then a slouchy hobo style is perfect for you. This will add bulk to your frame

• If your hips are larger than your upper body, consider a bag that tucks neatly under your arm. This will provide balance between your upper and lower body.

Knock-off and designer inspired handbags are also a big trend - and always will be. They are getting harder to spot as they imitate the real thing so well. If you want the expensive look without the price, I see no reason not to go with a knockoff purse. Only you, a person with a very keen eye, and the actual designer will know the difference.
