This week I thought I would write a little bit about how to apply self tan, in order to avoid the usual pitfalls and problems that can be encountered if you’re not careful.

I know my first post had a bit about this in it, so hope I am not repeating myself too much!

To summarise, most self-tanners are available in gel, cream, lotion and spray, and usually contain moisturiser (my favourite, St. Moriz, is a mousse).

They are great for adding color to your face and body, making a pale complexion look more outdoorsy, and also hiding cellulite and veins on your legs.

Many self tanning products can take up to an hour for your skin to develop into the tanned look, so try to plan ahead and make sure you leave enough time to do the job properly.

OK, now for some tips on application. This might seem a bit long winded but trust me, the end result is well worth it!

How to Apply Self Tanning Products.

· Prepare your skin by exfoliating. Shave your legs and scrub off dead skin in the shower. Rough patches on your skin will keep the self tanner from blending evenly. Try to avoid using a shower cream or exfoliator with a high amount of essential oils as these can react badly with the self tanner and make your tan look streaky or blotchy.

· Pat your body dry. This is the point where you would put gloves on if you use them (as you’ll know from my first post, I like to live dangerously and don’t!). Apply a thin even layer of self tanner on your body. Rub and rub until it looks completely even in colour. Let the colour develops. Of course if you want a deeper tan, you’ll need to apply another layer.

· Take off the gloves (if used) and wash your hands. Put a small dab of self tanner on only the backs of your hands and rub them together.

· Wait until the tan is dry before getting dressed.

· If some areas of your skin seem too dark, lighten it by exfoliating the skin in the shower with a loofah, then clean it with baby oil. Some self tanners can also be removed with lemon juice.

· Use a good quality product that doesn’t stain the sheets, mark your towels and give you a strange colour – you know the product I recommend!

See you again soon for more random musings on all things shallow!
