How to Boil the Perfect Egg

How to Boil the Perfect Egg - Without Boiling It

This method of boiling an egg is not new. However, with ‘green’ being the current buzzword it is now deemed eco-friendly and in fact it is.

The method is known as ‘passive boiling’ - it is an eco-friendly way to boil an egg and save on energy.

Here’s the method and it is probably very familiar to many of you:

- take an egg(s)

- place in pot in cold water and cover

- bring to a boil and shut off

- leave egg in water for at least 15 minutes for a hardboiled egg

It is the hot water, now cooling, that will in fact perfectly boil your egg every time.

I started using this method many years ago. That's entirely due to the fact that I had a tendency to put eggs on to boil and then would go off and do 10-20 million different things, forgetting entirely about the eggs until (a) - the pot was burning or (b) they were overcooked and useless.

Even today I still forget about the eggs I am boling - but they just sit, harmlessly, in the pot - and I find them just as good as if I had taken them out after 15-20 minutes.

Many foods can be cooked this way, including corn on the cob, and shrimps, etc.

Appliances to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint in the Kitchen

When I boil eggs, I boil them in my electric tea kettle. They come to a boil in only a couple minutes. This also reduces the amount of energy used (wasted) in the kitchen.

In fact the appliances used in the kitchen, and our methods of preparation account for 30 percent of energy consumption used/wasted in the home.

I know what you mean Nicole! Imagine eggs getting the best of us - this is such a relief. I have an egg waiting for me right now - no worries over here!

Great Hub - this is the same method I use! And once the egg has boiled and cooled, try this for getting it out of the shell! http://tinyurl.com/yvyvsc

I can't do it quite as well as the man in the video...but it does work!

Great advice! I will try this! Every few times that I boil eggs, I forget about them. Then I always think of the time that Opie tried to make breakfast (on The Andy Griffith Show) and he had to keep refilling the water on the boiled eggs because it kept boiling away. Andy asked him how long he had been cooking the eggs, and Opie told him. Andy replied, "Mmm-mmm! I always did like a nice 45-minute egg!"

That's another fun thing justmesuzanne - having the water boil away - I've done it all. You know if we want to cook 'green,' all we have to do is ask our grandmothers and other elders - they knew how to live 'green' - or just use common sense, as they would say.

I was such a fan of Andy Griffith - and Aunt Bee - and all things NC. Thanks for the breakfast episode.

I'm convinced the egg came first - everything has to have a birth - maybe it rolled out of the sea.

Glad you liked the hub - I cannot boil an egg any other way.

I am definitely using this method because aside from it being green, I can’t recall the last time I boiled a perfect egg. Thanks a bunch Bk :)

It really does work ajm5050 - and it is so easy! The method is great too because we are all multi-tasking (for no good reasons) and I used to forget the stupid egg and - what a mess! I do this with corn on the cob too.

This is a great method for getting a perfect hard boiled egg. What about a soft boiled egg?

Hello Catherine R - I always eat hardboiled - but my friend says she just lets it sit in the pot for no more than 5 minutes and is happy. I suppose less time is what it takes. Do let me know if you try it for less minutes - and I will add that to the link for folks that want soft-boiled.

Very nice hub truly informative. My grandmother made boiled eggs this way so I learned a long time ago. And thank goodness because I would hate to forget about it and start a fire or something. But as always thank you and keep smiling

Our grandmothers were great - weren't they Tracy711?

We learned so much from them and didn't even realize how much we were learning.

This just makes so much sense.

I'm glad you wrote!
