How to Build a Guitar

Many guitarists secretly harbour the desire to learn how to build a guitar. There is just something incredibly seductive about the thought of working with beautiful wood and turning it into a gorgeous guitar. At the same time though, the thought of learning how to build a guitar, probably fills most of us with a sense of fear. How could I possibly create a guitar that would actually be playable? Well, many amateurs have had the same fears and ended up with a very playable guitar indeed.

If you are serious about learning how to build your own guitar then you have two options. The first one is to study and then build your guitar from scratch.

The other option is to use a guitar kit. However, it would not be a bad idea to do a bit of studying even if you are going to use a kit.

If you are going to attempt to build your guitar from scratch you should avail yourself of some of the resources described in this hub. There are a number of great books, videos and online resources that will provide you with a thorough background in guitar building.

If you are going to use a kit you should look around a bit and find a kit that meets your needs. first of all, determine what kind of guitar you want to build. Obviously, deciding on whether you want to build an acoustic or electric guitar would be your first consideration. But if you have decided on an acoustic, are you looking to build a nylon-string classical or a traditional dreadnaught steel string?

You might also want to use a kit from a well-known guitar manufacturer. The C.F. Martin Company (one of the finest guitar companies on the planet) have an excellent series of kits.

And finally, you may find that there is a guitar-building workshop being held in your area. Although these are usually quite expensive, it is a great way to learn and you can pretty much be guaranteed that you will have an excellent guitar when you are finished.

So if you have been dreaming about building your own guitar, now is the time to learn how to build a guitar. With all the great products that are now available to teach you about guitar-building techniques and the option of purchasing excellent kits produced by the top guitar builders, there are really no excuses to put off your decision.
