51
You just learned that your cat is diabetic. You might be wondering, "What does that mean?" and "How do I treat it?". Diebetes in cats (and other pets) IS treatable, can be easily managed and can be done on a reasonable budget. It takes a lot of commitment to your pet, but with your love and care, it can continue living a long, happy, healthy life.
Your veterinarian will probably suggest insulin shots and diet changes that will help keep your cat's blood sugar regulated. Some cats may even have to be hospitalized for treatment if the diabetes is severe.
Your vet will show you how to administer the insulin shots (though many online guides are also available). It's usually done twice a day at 1-2 units of insulin per shot. You should monitor your cat at home to make sure to adverse side-affects to the insulin are present. Your cat's blood sugar is probably regulated if it's drinking and urinating normally.
There are many options for treatment and regulation but only you, as the owner, along with your vet, can decide which option os best for your cat.
