There are several considerations for changing your dog’s food. You may think that your dog is not as healthy as he should be. His coat is not shiny or he does not have a lot of energy.

You may have seen some news reports about healthy dog food. Or you may have done some research on your own and determined that the dog food you are using does not have the best ingredients.

Think about human nutrition. If we eat unhealthy food over a period of years, our bodies will deteriorate. The same is true for dogs. They depend completely on us.

How to change your dog’s food

So now you have decided to change your dog’s food. Don’t switch the dog food completely at first. Change the food gradually over one to two weeks.

Start out feeding three fourths of your dog’s old food and one quarter of the new food for a couple of days and gradually increase the amount of the new food. If your dog has loose stools, you may need to change the dog food even more gradually. Allow four to six weeks to see changes in your dog’s health.

What if my dog won’t eat the new food

Dogs don’t know if a food is good for them. The worst dog foods may contain sweeteners, salt and other flavoring agents to appeal to the dog but these ingredients are not healthy.

To help your dog adjust to the food, change the food even more gradually or you can even add plain cottage cheese or plain yogurt to the new food to help them change. Don’t give up because it is so important to your dog’s health to eat a high quality, nutritious food.
