Why do you need a strong password?

A password is used to login to an online account. It generally is between five and 12 characters and can be a combination of alphanumerical and symbol characters. You can also utilize upper and lowercase letters in a password. Every website has different criteria for how you choose a password that you have to abide by. However, there are steps you can take to choosing a strong password that will keep your accounts safe from harm. As long as you take password creation seriously, your accounts will be as safe as they possibly can from hackers online. If someone wants to get into your account, they will find a way but by choosing a strong password, you make it that much harder for them to get to your personal information.

Tips for Choosing a Password

  • Do not use anything associated with you, such as a name, address or birthday
  • Include letters, numbers and symbols if allowed
  • Use capital and lowercase letters
  • Do not use the same password for everything you do
  • Do not use a password again after changing it

How to choose a password

Choosing a strong password is the only way to truly protect an account from being hacked.  Most people choose a password that is simple to break and relates to their life; passwords like this are easily cracked, and they can cause trouble down the line if your account is broken into because of a simple password.  Passwords such as names, birthdays or even pets are easily guessed by crackers.  In fact, most computer users choose simple passwords and then wonder why their accounts are hacked.

What not to do when choosing a password

The first step to choosing a password is to understand the criteria a site wants when creating one.  Once you know what you need to do, you can start narrowing down the right type of password.  The right type of password generally contains a random hodge podge of letters and numbers, including upper and lowercase letters.  This is the only way to choose a strong password.  While it may be hard to remember, you can always save it in a document to refer to later as long as the data is kept in a safe place.  When in doubt, always choose a password that is random as opposed to common.  This is the only way to choose a strong password.
