How to Choose a Photography Club that's Best for You
59
Photography clubs are great to join to meet fellow photographers, learn more about photography, participate in competitions and to overall help you grow as a photographer. Photography clubs offer educational meetings with speakers on various photography topics, monthly competitions, workshops and field trips to local places and even places a little farther out. The great thing is no matter where you live there is likely a photography group that meets in your area. Both beginners and professionals alike attend these meetings allowing beginners to learn from professionals and believe it or not, allowing the professionals to learn from the beginners. It happens all the time! If you are a beginner don't worry about being new to photography. This is why these groups exist! These clubs are great opportunities for networking with other photographers as well. You'll be amazed at the opportunities you'll see by attending the meetings.
There are a couple important things to remembers when choosing a photography club. First, look for one that fits your needs. Do you like sit down meetings, participating in competitions or do you like getting out and practicing your skills in group photography outings? The majority of photography clubs have a small annual membership fee to help with renting space for meetings, planning, etc. Costs typically range from $25 / year to $65 / year depending on the group and where you live. You can also find some free outings if you dig enough such as DMV Photo Outings in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area.
The second most important thing to remember is that you can participate in more than one group. In fact, most photographers belong to several groups. Photographers enjoy meeting photographers from different areas, participating in more competitions and field trips. And if one group meetings on Tuesday evening and the other on Thursday evening, you're sure to catch at least one of the meetings each week.
The majority of these photography clubs have websites. Don't forget to check out their membership / about us page to learn why you should join their group as well as the cost, meeting times and other information.
