Flat Coated Retriever

These guys are my favorite, because they are versatile and gentle, and they possess an incredible drive with an amazing personality.  Folks tend not to be afraid of this breed like they are some of the other large breeds; they just aren’t very intimidating with their smiley faces cracked open all the time.  You can take them everywhere and they take it all in stride, easy to train and to live with, who could ask for more?

German Sheppard Dog

This breed really does do it all, and is a big hit with the American public.  Popular for good reason, GSD’s are healthy, strong, intelligent, and fairly easy to find.  Folks will think twice about trying to snatch your fanny pack while this guy is on duty, and their rangy, graceful lope is appealing to everyone watching the dog going down the trail. These dogs also are easy to train, groom, and live with, and have tons of fun going everywhere with their lucky owners.

Australian Cattle Dog

If you are looking for an ultimate Frisbee companion, look no further, you have found your breed.  I have never seen a breed of dog so into working as this breed, and you cannot keep them from chasing anything that moves, including you!  They will catch Frisbee until their gums bleed, and that is the truth, so if you need a dog that can work all day long without rest this is your breed, and they have an incredible reflex ability that makes sure they are always in position when it comes time to catch that bad boy.

Greyhound

If you live in a city and want a dog who can keep up with you on the pavement, but won’t rip your apartment apart, consider adopting a racing greyhound.  Equally at home indoors or out, they adapt easily to new environments, and so long as they remain leashed outside, will be perfectly amenable partners for the active in city jogger.  I love their soft, easy to maintain coat and workable personalities too, for those with extra busy lifestyles.

Border Collie

Another very popular breed is the Border Collie. You can find these guys almost everywhere, and while not packing the size of some of the other breeds, these dogs do have their merits. They do have a substantial amount of drive that needs to be worked off daily, and anyone not having enough time to spend with a Border Collie will come home to find the house trashed so make sure you have the time commitment for this breed before you take home one of these adorable puppies.  Also, this may not be your best choice if you are one of those people with dog allergies.

Used to live in WA - Puyallup area - now in Central Oregon -was caught by your breeds - excellent! I notice you don't have Alaskan Malamutes on there - ha ha. Few people do but love reading what everyone else is writing about dawgs! As a newbie, how do you get those links in the list to not show the http: jazz?

Hey akirchner, You have to love the Pacific Northwest! The links in the "More Doggy Links" section is just a links capsule. The other links are added by highlighting the words you want to make a link when you're editing a capsule, then clicking the link button and filling in the information (title, URL, etc).

Hi Lyria,

Actually it's a flat coat retriever. We have one for our duck dog and they are just the best!

Thanks for visiting.
