How to Clean iPod Headphones

Why clean iPod headphones?
Most consumers take for granted using their headphones. Headphones, whether worn in or outside the ear, get dirty easily from the build-up and grime around the ear. If left uncleaned, that build-up can lead to issues when listening to music. It can eventually distort or block sound and even lead to the headphone bud failing completely. Since iPod users do not think about headphones beyond buying an additional set or perhaps investing in a different type, the more conscientious a user is about cleaning their headphones, the longer they will last.

How to clean iPod headphones
When cleaning iPod headphones, you want to use a soft cloth, rubbing alcohol and Q-Tips. You dip the Q-Tip in a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol and scrub the bud clockwise to loosen build-up. You do not want to ever push down, go up or down or clean the headphone in any other method. This will lodge dirt into the bud and make it impossible to clean out. Once you have finished cleaning the bud, you will gently pad it down with the washcloth. You can then use the cloth to clean the outside of the buds and the wire. Avoid cleaning the connecting jack as any excess liquid may seep into the iPod when connected and cause internal damage to the device.
How often should iPod headphones be cleaned?
iPod headphones should be cleaned every two to three weeks depending on your build-up. Since each ear and the dirt that builds up on it are different, you may have to clean your headphones more frequently. The more you clean them, the easier it is to keep them in working condition. However, the longer you let them go without a cleaning, the quicker you run the risk of destroying the headphones and having to purchase brand new ones when you may not be able to afford to replace them. Take the time to take care of everything that came with your iPod and you will get the most out of everything bundled with the unit.
