Parents rely on communication from teachers to stay updated about what’s going on inside of the childcare classroom. One way to effectively communicate with the parents of the children in your daycare class is through newsletters.

Weekly, Bi-Weekly, or Monthly

While a weekly newsletter is ideal, a biweekly or monthly newsletter is more realistic for a busy childcare provider to accomplish. Templates from programs such as Microsoft Works, and Word Perfect make creating newsletters fast and easy. Free newsletter templates can also be found online by doing a simple web search.

Keep it Short

Parents are busy, so keep the contents of the newsletter short. Include information in your newsletter about upcoming events, what children are learning, theme recaps, and field trip info. You can also add sections to welcome newcomers, highlight staff accomplishments, and add parenting resources such as websites and foundations.

Check Your Spelling

A newsletter filled with misspelled words may give parents the impression that you don’t care. So never underestimate the power of spell check. If possible, let a coworker read over your classroom newsletter before you circulate it to parents.

Add Pictures

Add a little visual appeal to your classroom newsletters by using pictures. There are plenty of places online where you can find royalty free photos to use. You can also scan pictures of kids’ artwork into your computer and add them to your newsletters.

Newsletters are easy to create and they’re an effective way to keep parents updated about what's happening inside of their kids’ classrooms. And if the newsletters are informative, visually appealing, and circulated regularly, parents will look forward to receiving them.
