How to Create a Successful Website
75First of all, how would you define a successful website?
You have a successful website if it's doing what you want it to do-- without lots of roadblocks and not in a costly way..
Do you have time to read lots of computer books?
If not, lucky for you, this hub is for you! :-)
If you're into learning technical stuff however, may I suggest you visit my friend Stormy's hub.
She wrote an excellent article A List of Essential Web Design Skills
Personally, if I start trying to learn a subject I have very little clue on, it would take me a long time before I could start making a great website which means zero income for me as I learn the tricks. How long I don't know. I would rather pay $300-$400 per year to get something that won't drain my brain so that I could focus on building my business and get customers coming in as soon as possible. So, no lengthy computer books for me. Hopefully, the money coming in is enough to fund the $300-$400 I plan on spending per year. But that's a risk I'm willing to take.
What's the purpose of your website?
If you want to make a website, ask yourself what your purpose is for making one.
If your main purpose is to store and display pictures, I would suggest you check out photobucket.com, flickr.com, dotphoto.com or Kodakgallery.com. You could upload your pictures on their site easily. Your pictures will be viewable anywhere you go. It's a safe way to access your photos wherever you are although it's still a good idea to back it up at home. Sharing your pictures with friends and relatives or with anyone is free to a certain point.
You can also order prints and albums (with your selected photos already printed inside). The price is reasonable and sometimes have promotions. Most of the companies allow you to customize calendars, albums, mugs, shirts using your pictures. These would make as wonderful gifts.Try many or all of them.
Be aware that some have certain limits on the amount of pictures or files you can store on your site. They might charge you extra if you go over it. A trick is to open different accounts with different names and you virtually have an unlimited storage.
If your main purpose is to connect with your family and friends, Instead of making a website from scratch, I would suggest you sign up with facebook.com, myspace.com or friendster.com. You invite "friends" who will be able to see your website, your blog, your pictures and everything else you do on your site, as long as they sign up too.You could set it to private if you want to so you could limit the people that have access to your site. Personally, I prefer facebook. It is easy to use and has a lot of members. You also have a lot of things you could do to customize your page.
If you plan on having an online business or want your online business to be more successful, I suggest following what many successful people have done online. They used Site Build It or SBI. This way, you skip many of the problems and roadblocks that other online business owners have experienced.
Before you even go further, let me tell you this:
Two weeks ago, I bought SBI myself and signed up as one of their Affiliates.
Affiliates are common among web hosts. Actually, it's not just common among web hosts, it's common among ALL sorts of businesses. Amazon has them. Ebay has them. It's a way to reward people for referring their business to another individual, and I think that's just fair.
Personally, if I'm impressed with a product, I get passionate about it. I'll start talking about it. If the company rewards me for driving customers to them, so much the better! If you do sign up with SBI, I suggest you sign up as an affiliate too. It's one of the best around. They treat their affiliates fairly.
I hope to reach those who are contemplating on buying a cheap website for their business. You know those free and $4.99 ones? Those are just lures. You can't make anything useful for your business out of those sites. I've tried them myself. It's a waste of time. You'll want to upgrade, and upgrade some more...til it's no longer cheap! I also hope to reach those who are contemplating on buying expensive websites. I've had a beautiful website before. All complete. All it didn't have was traffic. It was like a big mansion in the middle of nowhere. I hope you don't start building it until you see SBI and know what it can do for you. I also hope to reach those who already have an online business but need a better way to drive traffic there. Maybe SBI can help you too.
I'm not sure how I could explain SBI clearly to you. I'm a mom and I'm definitely not a web designer. I'm not an expert w/ the terms in a way to explain things to you clearly in my own words. I'm also not as articulate as Toby and Lisa in the videos. I'm still studying SBI at the moment but I want to help you. I know that like me, many of you want success with their online businesses. I saw Lisa from youtube and she explains things very clearly. I hope that by putting these wonderful videos made by these successful SBI owners, you will have a clear picture of what the company is and what it can do for you and what you need to do to be successful.
This is Toby from http://wreaths-across-america.org
This is from Lisa of http://www.2createAwebsite.com and hrttp://www.flat-stomach-exercises.com
From Carla of http://www.i-love-sbi.com
From Tomaz of http://www.tennismindgame.com
Are these people paid to make these videos?
I don't know if you could call it that way. What I know is that Ken Evoy, the President of SBI made a contest for SBI owners to make videos of how they love SBI. The winner receives $10,000.
Personally, I don't think it's wrong to reward people with something they worked hard for. I mean, making good videos take time (and time is money) and it takes the right knowledge to make it look nice.
Also, I don't think it's easy to fake love for a company. If these people are just in for the money, you won't see the love in their eyes nor the passion they have for SBI.
SBI is applicable to all sorts of people. Sorry, link has been removed.

Being ranked high in the search engine is very very important. If you're listed in the search engine but are low on the list, nobody will find you. Maybe they will, but only if they've exhausted the first few on the list. SBI will show you how to rank high on the search engines. That's the way to get traffic who could eventually be your customers. NO html knowledge required.
I want to know if other people are happy with their web hosts, so I searched for those in the top 10 list on the net.
Here's what I got:
Top 10 web host from http://www.top10webhosting.com
- Monster Host
- Blue Hosting
- Host Gator
- Yahoo!Small Biz
- IX Web Hosting
- Lunar Pages
- WHP
- PowWeb
- EasyCGI Windows
- Starlogic
Top 10 Web Host from http://www.web-hosting-top.com
4.Go Daddy
10.Vista Pages
Somebody from Youtube said that the top spots on these lists could be bought for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. I don't know how true it is, but I noticed SBI did not even make it to the Top 10 lists of this two companies!:-(
After looking at the lists, I went to Youtube.com to see if these Top companies have happy customers too. I wanted to compare them with those made by SBI customers.
I searched for a few minutes, typing different company names each time. After about 20 minutes of searching I could not find anything close to the videos made about SBI, so I gave up (am I impatient?)! I did not bother to look at those at the bottom of the lists anymore.
I thought, "Aren't these companies good enough? Why don't people make videos about them?"
I don't have anything against these companies. In fact I've bought several domain names from Godaddy.com. I think they are a wonderful company to buy domain names. They are there to provide services the way they know how. But to build an online business, you'll also need Traffic. You need lots of support. You need to be seen by those who need your products or services. If you have to pay a lot to get traffic to your site,it will be hard for your business to survive. What's business without traffic? A dead business!
To see a detailed comparison between Yahoo, 1&1 and SBI click HERE. (When you reach this page, you'll need to scroll down to the middle and click to where you'll see the blue highlighted words "Click here to compare SBI! with Yahoo and 1&1")
I think it's a good idea to use that table to compare SBI with others on the Top 10 web hosts on the lists or on those you're currently using or plan on using.
By the way...
There are many ways of earning money online: selling on Ebay, on Amazon, becoming an affiliate of these two companies and many others, using google adsense, blogging, etc. However, in order to be successful, you need to have the right tools.Without the right tools, you'll end up like the rest of online businesses that failed or didn't grow much during their first year. How do you know you're using the right tools? If many people from different backgrounds have been successful using it, then you have the right tools. SBI is the right tool. If you don't believe it, you owe it to yourself to check them out. They show you many ways to make money on your website, so you have multiple streams of income coming in. They have so much resources, I can't even count them! Their site has a support forum so you can ask questions when needed. Those that answer you are SBI users themselves and they will talk from their experience. The forum is NOT manned by sales/customer reps. who could only give scripted answers.
IS Site Build It or SBI a scam?
I have to ask this question because I know a lot of you are thinking about this somewhere in the back of your mind.
All I can say is that SBI is not a scam. No, I haven't checked their background. I only checked http://www.ripoffreport.com. The only comment I saw for SBI(Site Build It) or Sitesell is a lady who complained of her money not being refunded to her when she asked for it. I did not read through it all since it was getting so long.
But here is what I'd suggest if you worry about refunds. This applies to any company you deal online. I'm talking from my own experience with refunds. Print the agreement. Print the guarantee and pay with your credit card. If you have to cancel a subscription or service, do it within the specified time(better still, do it 2-3 days ahead, to cushion yourself from unexpected delays , emergencies or forgetfulness), and do it via phone and in writing, make sure that you send a copy of the email to yourself too. Better still, send it through priority mail w/ return receipt. That way, you'll know if the company received your request. Follow up w/ a phone call. Jot down the date and time of the call and who you spoke with. Keep all the correspondence you have. Check to see if your credit card has been credited back. If not, contact your credit card company and dispute the charges--in writing. Make sure you keep the correspondence you have w/ them too, until you get the results you need. Usually, if they have evidence that supports your claim, they'll be able to reverse the charges.
I hope I've provided you with some valuable information you could use. If you're happy with these information and would like to give me credit for bringing it here, I hope you'd CLICK HERE or on any of the links in this site to go directly to sitesell. Entering another person's URL on the address bar however, then going to sitesell would probably give credit to the person owning that address.
PS. If you plan on using the information here, DO bookmark this page, add it to your desktop or add it to your favorites. You'll find it easier then.
(I will update this hub with a link to my SBI site when I'm done making the site. My target date is the end of April to middle of May 2007. Feel free check it out at that time)
Please feel free to post a comment, a question or send me a message. Thank you!

Hi crazycat-I agree. A successful website will need time to work on. It has to have good content, it has to rank high on the search engines and it has to look good.
If you have to start from scratch, you have to worry about all of these.
If you're going to use those web hosts that provide websites with templates already, you only need to worry about the content and search engine rankings.
If you're going to use SBI, all you need to worry about is the content. they take care of the tech stuff. They basically teach you how to get your site on the top of the search engine list so you'll have lots of traffic. Of course, making the content will still need lots of time.
Thanks for your comment!
Hi Mschani,
Good luck with SBI - I too know how amazing they are. I used them for my very first website a couple years ago.
Fran
Hi Fran,
Thanks for your well wishes. I'm happy to hear from a fellow SBI user. I haven't set up my site yet as I have a lot of things to study but I can't wait to do it already..lol. Good luck to you on your online business/es too!
Rose Marie/Mschanl
Ooooh, Mschanl ... Just looking at that stack of computer books made me tired. I'm glad you've found a simpler solution.
Cheers,
Sheila
This is a truly excellent hub - very well done. I wrote a hub advocating the exact opposite, but like Hilary, I know a great competitor when I see one!
Hey Sheila, Am I GLAD! I don't think I'll get past 1 of those books. Well, I might but for how long, that's another question...lol Thanks for your comment.:)
Hi Stormy! Thanks for praising this hub. Could you tell I worked long days and nights on it..lol. I hope the videos keep working though. The other day all did not work and it made the hub look incomplete, driving my hubscore way down. Have to check out your hubs as well!
Yes - I could tell - it takes one to know one. Your attention to detail is to be admired. I know because I am the same and my 'competing hub' took absolutely ages. Consider yourself admired.
Aww, thanks Stormy! You're admired as well. Best of luck to both of us!:)
I used SBI as well several years ago: it't a great way to get started, because it gives you a step-by-step approach to everything you need to do. Great hub!
Thanks for your comment Adriana! I'm amazed how many people here are using SBI!
Thx for the education, I needed it.
Thanks for your comment Shirley. I really hope it will help you. Good Luck!
Hi Subirkrdatta. No, I haven't heard of those companies.
You clearly put a lot of work into this. A friend and I spent thousands, only to be deivered a mini-taj mahal then essentially dumped. Had to learn raw HTML and use their CSS pages as "templates" to change content, etc. to build new pages, and had to go in and do title tags, meta descriptions, meta keywords, and more on my own, self-taught. Gee, before all I had done online was email and a few Google searches... and they promised: "We do all the hard work."
It's great to know there actually IS a company that "does all the hard work" so someone can focus on content, networking, blogging, content sharing sites, and all the other things that drive business. You did a good job here, and it's a valuable service, especially for "newbies."
Hey Caregiver, I appreciate your comment. I feel for you. That's why I did this page (at the risk of being called a spammer) because so many people spend thousands of dollars and their time for something that doesn't work. This will take a lot of work too, it will take some studying, but it' gonna be worthwhile. I'm a newbie too:) Good Luck to you and Thanks!
I've read good things about SBI and even contemplated signing up myself when they had a Valentine's Day 2-for-1 special going on recently. I've picked up some domain names over the years but haven't done anything with them, and I know I should put something in them to at least start the Google sandbox clock ticking. I seem to need about 24 MORE hours in each day, though! ;-) Good luck with your business ventures!
Hi TouristGuide,
I'm glad to hear these things from you. I myself almost didn't make it to their special. I was afraid of losing more money! I just signed up with some expensive course on the net you know. So what I did was just ask myself what the worst thing that could happen. Their full money back guarantee is good for 30 days, after which the refund will be prorated for a full year. I'm giving myself about 90 days to make it work. If it doesn't, I don't think I've lost much if I try to get a refund. The worst thing that I'd lose is probably $100.
What I'd say to you TouristGuide if you haven't signed up is to just jump right in. If SBI is right for you, then every day you're not using it you're losing money!
I don't know if Google is worth it. Right now, I see my income as $.08 after 4 hubs...lol
Thank you for your nice comment. I appreciate it. Good luck on your business ventures as well and I'll talk to you again!
I agree and you can change something the site from time to time for a better look
and for SEO facts. And: content is the way...

Thank you for an extremely informative and well written Hub. I have bookmarked this site for future reference when I put together my sister's site. Thanks again.
Gerd24--Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.
Amery- Thank you for praising the hub. I've worked hard on this. Good luck on putting together your sister's site!
Good hub, I am an sbier and have been for 8 months.
Hi Chantel, thanks for your compliment. It's nice to see many SBIers here!
A brilliant, well thought article and plenty of suggestions.
Hi Rudra,Thank you for the compliment.:-)
Very nice article, all the links were appreciated.
I prefer goldphoria.com myself. It has everything especially for those that don't know a thing about html!
Hi Shelric, thanks for your compliment. I hope those links help you.
Hi Peter, thanks for your comment. I did go to the site and see lots of features. I wonder if it helps with the search engine rankings and build traffic? I did not see anything referring to that on the site.
I would suggest people to go up my site where there's link comparing SBI to yahoo and 1 & 1 and compare goldphoria as well.
SBI has too many features and resources to mention here.
Yeah, that's great. I have a SBI website my self. I've had it for a couple months now and it is realy working out great.
This is an excellent Hub, I enjoyed the article and comments, chuckled some and wonder where you get the time to do all this work. Overall very informative.
Hi Selge! Thanks for your compliment. I really appreciate it. Actually, this hub took me several days to finish. I started out with just a few capsules. If I thought of something that I'd find useful to the subject, I had to go edit the article and add any useful idea I have. So, if somebody read this hub weeks ago and come back here to read again, he'll see that it's a lot different and improved. It also helps that I'm passionate with the subject. It makes it more fun and easier to work on even if I sometimes had to stay up late at night to do it. I'm glad you enjoyed it.:-)
This hub deserves another thumps up.
I got my website hosted by GDI. My site was now 3 yrs old and embedded some adsense code also within my site. As an affiliate of GDI I made passive income and force to quit my daily job at the office. So happy that I did!!
Building your own site is really fun and easy using sitebuilder and I think what you recommend here is so much more easier to use. Thanks for the info...
Hey babybrownfox, thanks for your nice comment. I'm glad you're doing well with your passive income. Let's hope you do even better with SBI. Best of luck to you!
Great Info. I appreciate the advise, it will definetly help me in decisions with my own website.
Thanks So Much....
Hi Marco Man, Thanks for your compliment. I'm glad to know you find the information here helpful. Good luck on your future endeavors.
nice u teach all
i like it
Thanks for your comment ahmu. I'm glad you like it.:)
Awesome Hub Page and great information. I've often thought about using SBI, as I've spent way too much time and money trying to learn how to build web sites, and the main thing I've learned is to hire someone to do it. I may just try SBI, and will be sure to order through you. I need to get through a course I'm taking right now that is taking up more than 24 hours a day right now, but then most likely will give it a shot. Please stay in touch.
Mike Stokes <> Baton Rouge, LA
Mike, Thank you so much for your compliment, and for thinking of ordering through me (if you do) it's very much appreciated.:-)
I'm glad you found SBI again Mike. I myself took 2 weeks before deciding to jump in. I do hope you give this a try after you're done with the course you're taking. If you encounter problems(as some SBI newbies often have), there is a forum there with many successful SBIers eager to help.
Good luck on your website, Mike.I hope to hear from you.Would be happy to help and keep in touch.
Great hub. Ken does give a lot of tools for building sites. I have a couple SBI sites. I also have sites that are hosted elsewhere. One of the advantages of SBI is that you can get a Shopsite Shopping cart for about half the price!
One of my websites, Tocaguitarra.com, is in Spanish and I kept getting emails in Spanish from people who didn't know how to order products once they got in my other shopping cart, because it was in English and they didn't understand it.
Shopsite was the only shopping cart I could find that allows you to change all the text inside the cart to any language you want. When I found out SBI was offering this shopping cart, I moved that website to SBI. What a relief! Now my Hispanic customers can actually know how to order when it's all translated to Spanish.
All the Best, Jean
Hi Music Lady, I must admit, with all the resources SBI has, it's just now that I stumbled upon shopsite. I don't know anything about the shopsite shopping cart. I'm gonna find something about that in the forum and come back here. Thanks for your comment. It's nice to know that you have several SBI sites. You must be doing well with those.
What an impressive list of resources. Great hub
Great hub. I use another hosting, site building company and I do believe it is the way to go. Can they handle heavy traffic with little or no down time?
Although I am not there with the traffic yet ...I can alway hope for the best. This is why I picked the one I did.
I will check it out and thank you for sharing.
My best to your success!
Plaw-- thanks for your comment. I just found more resources today. I'm planning to add it here in a few days.
Music Lady- because of your comment, I did some research and uncovered some useful things. I'll update my site in a few days.
gjcody-- for your comment. I think they can handle heavy traffic. I went to the compare yahoo/sbi module and opened the link inside the page. The information there seems to infer SBI sites could handle heavy traffic.
I also went to the forum and saw many SBIers having 1000 or more traffic per day on their site. I haven't read about problems with down time. I wish you success too!
Great content Mschanl!!
Coming from someone who has had a lot of difficulty with this very subject. I will be taking a closer look at SBI later on this week.
Thank you for not only being so informative, but also for supplying us with all of the links and video. I have learned from your hub design as well as from the content it contains!
Thanks again.
Nothing but SBI for me too. Gotta love SBI!!!!!!!!
Hi Onthebrink-- thanks for a wonderful compliment and finding this informative. Unfortunately, somebody thought otherwise and decided to flag this hub. Sorry, I have to remove some links.
Hi Sonji-Good to see another SBIer here. All the best to you and your site.:-)
I agree with you on places to buy sites from and the charge for all of the ad ons. However, I must add to be careful to not sign up for something that is no term. That way if you are not happy with them, you can ditch them. Just make sure you can transfer your domain.
I will have to check out SBI
Thanks for the information. After looking at this, I'm considering SBI and I was wondering about the link building that they talk about in their video.
Do you know anything about that....such as do they find other sites to link to you on something like a three way, or non-reciprocal linking basis? Or do they set up reciprocal links? My understanding is that reciprocal links are possibly not counted in helping your search engine rankings, but one way links are. Do you know how much of the link finding and building functions they perform?
That is something I'm really trying to work on ---so even though I already have a site, it might be worth it to switch it to SBI for this alone.
Also, I assume if I go to SBI using your link in this hub page that you would get credit? --- which I want to be sure to do if I decide to sign up for it.
Thanks for your help.
Hi there Susan!
What they show you is how to build targeted traffic to your website. After that, they show you ways to monetize your site, like becoming affiliates to certain companies.
This is how affiliates work--you sign up with these companies, promote their products by putting their trackable links on your sites and when a visitor from your site clicks on those links and buys from that site, you get a commission. I don't think they use those links to help you in the rankings, it's mostly to monetize.
They show you how to rank high in the search engines, I don't really know how to explain though but they have this Brainstorm It program that helps you find the right keywords for your particular Niche.
If you sign up as an affiliate, you'll be amazed at how much links you"ll have access to. There will also be a forum there for you to ask questions. Don't think that when you sign up, you're by yourself. Lots of users frequently log in to the forums to ask help and others are there to help. I've been there several times and people did try to help me. I will also be available to answer your questions by email (so long as I know the answer..lol)So don't worry.
Yes, if you click on the SBI link up there where I say I'll get credited, or any of the SBI links here, and sign up, I will get credited. I'd appreciate that.
Good luck and don't hesitate to send me a message if you have questions. Thanks for your comment.:)
Hi Sandilyn, for some reasons, I missed your post. Thanks for your comment and good luck!
What a great hub. Thank you for posting this. There is a ton of stuff in here that I think about but never take the time to really look for. We started our first site years ago with SBI never looked back since.
Thanks Andres. Glad to know SBI helped you too.
Great work - and you got the prize!

Having a successful website also needs time for site owners to improve their site - content, SEO factors and the overall look.
