Here's How I Created This Awesome Collage

Step One: Download iStock_4696750Large.jpg from iStock's website. It's a 3008 X 2000, 3.68 MB High Resolution photo of a bunch of empty 35mm slide frames. I downloaded it for free. I'm not sure if it's still free but it'll only cost a few bucks if it's no longer free (a smaller version is only$1.00).

Step Two: Open the file with Adobe Photoshop (I used 5.0 but any version that features basic selection tools and allows you to work with layers will do fine).

Step Three: Open all of the photos you plan to use to fill up the empty slide. Or just work on a few at a time (it may take a few days to complete the entire project).

Step Four: Make a background copy of the iStock photo (this will keep the original intact in case you want to create a different collage later).

Step Five: With the background copy selected, zoom in on the dark gray slide with the picture of the lake and the red raft. You'll notice that this is the only slide with something already in it.

Step Six: Using the polygonal lasso tool (or selection tool of your choice), select and erase the picture of the raft on the lake. Set the visibility of the background layer to off.

Step Seven: Drag one of your pictures from the photo bin into the work area. Ensure the background copy (the one with the empty slides) is the top layer. Change its opacity to 50%.

Step Eight: Select the layer with the photograph that will be entered into one of the blank slide frames. Click image, transform, free transform (Ctrl + T). Grab a corner of the photo and shrink it and rotate it until it fits within the 35mm frame.

Step Nine: Click on the background copy and change the opacity to 100%. Select the blur tool @ 30 px and blur the inside edges of the 35mm slide frame a little.

Step 10: Continue this process untill you've filled in as many of the 35mm slide frames as you like. You'll notice there are quite a few irregular shapes. These will require a little patience. Once you're done you'll have a masterpiece that'll make a perfect gift.
