A Way to Determine the Number of Shutter Releases

How to Determine The Number of Shutter Actuations on Your DSLR

At some point, you might need to know how to determine how many shutter releases your DSLR has performed.

I have a Nikon D40X, and like most (if not all Nikon DSLRs), there is no built in way to check the number of actuations. The info is recorded into the EXIF data of each picture, though. The easiest way I found to get the magic number is to download Opanda, a free EXIF reader.

Once you have Opanda installed, open your most recent jpeg file. Then scroll down towards the bottom and look for "Total Number of Shutter Releases."

I've had my Nikon D40 for about a year and discovered that I have about 2106 shutter releases, a fairly small number considering Nikon rates the camera good for approximately 150,000 shots.

If you are thinking about buying a camera and ask the seller how many actuations it has, basically, the info may not be onboard the camera, but it's available.

Good Shooting :-)
