How to Do a Colon Cleanse

We humans have evolved to live a very different lifestyle from the way we currently live in the city. Ideally we should be fishing out of a pristine sea, drinking from a mountain river and picking berries from shrubs. This isn't the case which is why we need to colon cleanse now and again. The foods we buy from the supermarket are so far removed from the foods that our cave man ancestors would've eaten. Our foods are often grown on the other side of world, are harvested too early and are full of chemicals to extend their shelf life. As if that wasn't enough, we also load our foods with fat, sugar and salt.

No prizes for guessing why Westerners are so unhealthy! The chemicals found in the foods we eat end up in our bodies. In order to remove them, regular bowl movements are required. Most people don't eat nearly enough fruit, veg or fiber which means their bodies can't eliminate the toxins adequately. Toxins can therefore build up over the years causing your colon to be blocked.

So what happens when our bodies become clogged with toxins?

If your body is full of toxins you can end up with bowel syndrome (IBS), bloating, lethargy, constipation or gas. The constipation adds to the severity of the problem. The colon is blocked and can't get rid of the toxins which leads to more constipation, a loop that is difficult to break.

If you have a clogged colon then don't worry, there's plenty of options for you. The easiest way is to drink lots of water, including green and black tea. This helps flush away the build up of old fecal matter, mucus and half-digested food. Drinking water is fine if your colon isn't too blocked, otherwise you may need some more intensive detox methods.

If you want a more thorough clean of your colon then you will need to buy some herbal preparations, laxatives or homeopathic remedies. You can do your colon a great favour by allowing it to rest. You can do this by drinking water, fresh juices and raw food, allowing your colon to process the old food rather than dealing with any new food.

Then there's colon enemas. This is probably not something you should attempt at home, instead look out for a local salon which offers colonic irrigation. This is because if it's not done correctly, the solution can be absorbed by the intestines and have catastrophic results.

After you have cleaned your colon try and prevent it becoming clogged again. You can do this by eating healthy foods including fruit and veg along with avoiding foods such as burgers and fries.

Great advice April, I've been drinking lots of water regularly myself for several years now and definitely notice the difference from the "old" me!

Lately I've been carrying around one of those big nalgene water bottles with me all the time, usually with a green tea bag floating inside. It keeps me feeling refreshed, keeps me away from heavier caffeinated products like coffee, and keeps me in hydration and antioxidants. I can definitely vouch for the invigorating feeling that you get from a regular dose of green tea.
