Why should you know how to document electronics issues?

When you take an electronics device in to be fixed, many issues can arise during the service process.  Things can get lost, things can sort of be repaired or they can come back damaged or with another problem occurring.  While every technician strives to repair a product completely, this is not always a case.  If something arises before, during or after the process, you want to document those service issues to protect yourself and your devices.


How to document electronics issues

You should take the time to document electronics service issues from start to finish.  You do not simply document issues but the entire process from bringing your device in or sending it out to it being returned to your own hands.  You want to create a file folder and include any documentation given to you about the process.  You want to take down the name of everyone you deal with in regards to your device's service issues, along with what they say, any information they give you on the repair process and anything they need you to do.  If you have to do anything, you want to document what it is and when you do especially if you need to give them anything from your device in addition to the unit itself.


What to do if you cannot document an electronics issue

It is important if you talk to anybody that you take down their name, their employee ID and their position.  Make sure to keep record of everything they say, including estimates of when the device will be done.  In many cases, if a device takes too long to repair and you can prove it, a company will replace the product out of courtesy but only if you raise the issue.  Only by taking down this documentation can you truly prove that.  Whenever a service issue arises, it is your burden of proof to prove what is going on and why this is an issue for you and the use of your device.
