Why should you know how to document electronics service issues?

Documenting electronics issues, especially if they keep popping up, is the only way to prove to a manufacturer or warranty service that you have had continued issues.  In America, there is something called the No Lemon Law.  This means that if you have the same issue three times with a device and it is not fixed, a manufacturer or warranty provider is required to provide you with a suitable replacement.  Only by fully documenting the issues you have with a device can you prove what issues are taken place, how frequently and any attempt to fix them.

How to document electronics service issues

When an issue arises with your electronics, you want to take note of what happened.  If you can do this in a document on your computer, you want to start with the date and time the issue popped up.  Then, you want to explain the issue in as much detail as you can.  You want to explain what happened, what you were doing when it occurred and what happened when the issue stopped.  If the issue fixed itself, explain how that happened and if you did anything to make it happen.  If you can include any technical information, such as what you did to troubleshoot, include that as well.  Every little bit you include in the documentation will help get the device repaired.

What to do if you cannot document an electronics service issue

If you absolutely cannot document an electronics issue, simply make a notation of that.  Do not think that just because you cannot document it that it does not count, even if a manufacturer or provider says otherwise.  They will do anything they can to not help you, so the more prepared you are to deal with that factor, the easier it will be truly get your electronic devices repaired or replaced.  Only by providing what happened will these companies help you.  Unfortunately, that is the nature of the service and repair industry nowadays.
