Torso Introduction and Basics...

An impressive torso can add depth to your drawing. A major part of the human body consists of torso so much care should be taken in drawing it. A torso can be unique depending upon the type of the body. There are three basic body types: Ectomorphic, Mesomorphic and Endomorphic.

Ectomorphs have bodies that are thin structured, muscular and full of veins.

Where as the mesomorphs have balanced proportions of fat and muscles present in their body and the endomorphs have heavier bodies rich in fat content.

You should have a particular kind of body type in mind before sketching the torso.

Shapes of Torso: Male vs. Female

When drawing a torso you must take care of the fact that there are differences between the male and female bodies. The image of a hour glass should be kept in mind when drawing a female torso as the sizes of chest and hips are equal in females.

On the other hand, men have broader chests that are wider than their hips. While drawing a body of a male you can visualize it as a triangle with the narrower end of the triangle consisting of the waist. Ideally, you can think of it as drawing a v shaped upper torso. However you can always add little thickness to the waist from the sides unlike the ideal v shape. This way you can make your subject look more natural.

Refine the Torso

You can go on refining your drawing by including descriptions of bones and muscles after you have made the basic triangular shape.

If you are making a male with thin body, you should provide details for the pectorals, abdominal muscles and separations of the chest. This can be made prominent by drawing a line emphasizing the center of the chest and the pecs.

While drawing the female figure make sure you don't make the upper torso too narrow. The breasts don't curve up to make full circles as they are not completely spheres and are joined to the muscles of the shoulders. They should look natural and shouldn't be drawn either too close or too far from each other. You should position them in a downward direction from the center of the chest. Be careful not to place them either too high or low, as this will result in a disproportionate figure.

One Final Tip on Torso Drawing

An effective method to increase the muscular look in the torso is by drawing some lines in specific regions. The lines can be added to show the bulky muscles. Take care to make the lines curved if you are trying to make bulky and massive muscles especially in the areas of the chest and pecks since they have a round look to them. While straighter lines can be used to show tensed up leaner muscles. You can draw lines representing the ribs so that the body looks and feel more muscular. It is easy to draw the six abs because they have a square shape with round corners. For a massive body try making the basic v bigger.
