Halitosis

It is very embarrassing and uncomfortable that when you open your mouth to talk or laugh you release a bad breath. This common disorder is known medically as halitosis and is usually due to poor care of teeth and gums. Four out of every ten people find themselves in this predicament. But what really brings bad breath and what can you do to ensure your breath stays fresh?

The source of bad breath is due to decaying teeth, trapped particles of stale food, infection of nasal cavity, lungs infection, chronic bronchitis and uncontrolled diabetes. Alcohol, smoking, chewing tobacco, foods with aromatic compounds of garlic and onions will also add to bad breath. Foods with garlic and onions have aromatic compounds that enter the blood stream and are carried to the lungs and then exhaled. Gum disease and especially when accompanied by bleeding gums will certainly bring bad breath.

Decaying Teeth

Below Normal Body Weight? Take Care.

Persistent bad breath and red tender, or easily bleeding gums may be a sign of gum disease. If you experience any of these, consult with your dentist as gingivitis is reversible if detected early. If you suspect you have a gum disease and a below normal body weight, consult with your doctor (not a dentist) for your body calcium levels. If the calcium levels are below normal values, let your doctor tell you why - you may have to avoid all foods made from wheat! Giving you a prescription of calcium supplements may not be sufficient.

When you brush your teeth, brush your tongue too to help have even fresher breath. Rinsing with mouth-washes may seem great but this is not the case. They have high alcohol concentrations that may dry out the mucus membranes and aggravate existing inflammations.

Regular Brushing and Flossing

More than three hundred different types of bacteria will inhibit the mouth causing bad breath in the form of morning breath. Regular brushing and flossing of your teeth and mouth will keep your teeth clean and be free of bad breath. And this is How You Fight Bad Breath:

  1. Brush you teeth after every meal and especially before you go to bed.
  2. Your toothbrush is a disposable item. Replace your toothbrush every 2-3 three months or sooner if the bristles become worn out or splayed.
  3. Keep your toothbrush dry and uncovered with bristles facing downside as micro organisms will thrive in moist toothbrush.
  4. And as crude as it may sound, brush your teeth once in a while with a paste made of bicarbonate of soda and water to remove minor stains on teeth - your teeth will become whiter.
  5. If you can avoid cigarettes and chewing tobacco; they lead to bad breath and may cause cancer.
  6. Eat healthy, balanced meals with calcium and vitamin D. Sunshine should provide vitamin D
  7. Once every 2-3 years see a dentist to examine your teeth. They'll always have something to tell you.

Gum Disease

Persistent bad breath and red tender, or easily bleeding gums may be a sign of gum disease. If you experience any of these, consult with your dentist as gingivitis is reversible if detected early. If you suspect you have a gum disease and a below normal body weight, consult with your doctor (not a dentist) for your body calcium levels. Cranberry

Cranberry is a North America berry which has great potential in improving oral health. Cranberry fruit contain proanthocyanidins. Proanthocyanidins will prevent gingivalis bacteria from adhering to the teeth below the gum line. This therefore means cranberries will help ward off Periodontitis or severe gum disease by serving as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.

Severe gum disease has an increased likelihood of heart disease and stroke.
