How to Find Motivation For Self Improvement
62Deciding To Make Some Changes
I think everyone thinks about self improvement at some point. Theres always something to learn, experience or acomplish. Why do we put it off for so long? The sad truth is that there may not always be a tomorrow to get started on learning a new language, finish that home improvement project, take an art class, quit smoking, travel or lose that extra weight. With only one life to live, why don't we all make the most of it?
It's very easy to be lazy or relaxed about self improvement. But putting it off only leaves you with guilt or depression for not seizing the opportunity. How can you get yourself motivated and get going on that new project?
Discovering Your Drive
Finding your drive is the first step to getting started on any self-improvement project. For a long time, I had trouble meeting new people. It was difficult for me to keep eye contact and speak up when I had an opinion. I finally decided that I wanted to be more respected and less ignored when it came to social activities. That was my drive. I wanted r-e-s-p-e-c-t from my peers.
The next step was to lay out a plan that would allow me to achieve my end goal. I decided to meet as many new people as possible and hold conversations with as many different people as I could. By pushing myself outside my comfort zone, and developing these skills, I was able to improve on my social skills.
The final step to any self-improvement is to maintain what you changed. If I stop meeting new people and let my social circle recede, I'll be back where I started in my little bubble. I'm not as aggressive about meeting a lot of people, but I also don't let myself stay quiet and passive in conversation either.
It is very important to keep up on yourself once you've made a change. Much like making home improvements, any changes need to be maintained or all your hard work will be for nothing.
Prioritizing Your Self-Improvement Goals
With so many things we want to do or improve upon, it's easy to just put it off because the list is so long. To keep yourself on track you should write out the list in order of importance. If losing weight is your top goal, followed by a pottery class and finally to finish the book you bought months ago, it makes it more manageable. You complete one thing at a time and do not skip anything. Of course, it will take time (the length of which will depend on the project) to complete your goals, but you'll feel that sense of accomplishment at the end and will have added one more check mark to your list. Completing your first self improvement will be an improvement on its own because you'll have finally pushed yourself from your comfort zone and improved your drive which will help in many other areas of your life.
Before you close the browser and forget what you read here, start your list of self improvement goals right now. What are you waiting for? It won't take long and it can't hurt anything. Hopefully, it will drive you to complete at least one project. Why not get started today and achieve more than you thought possible?
