HubPages Writing Style

Finding your writing style on HubPages can take time.  When I publish this hub, I will become an official "expert" according to HubPages. Even though I don't feel like an expert hubber, I am attempting to answer the question of how to find your hubpages writing style, because I want to know what mine is. I am exploring others' styles as well as mine to give me direction. Maybe one day HubPages will come up with an algorythm to tag your HubPages writing style. Until then I am using the tools I have.

I have used hub-metrics, google analytics, and comments to give me guidance. My first comment was from a software designer who designed a music player that I liked and wrote a hub about. Since then I have decided to take a positive tone. In other words, I am here to build up, not tear down and complain. I tried writing a couple funny hubs and found that I enjoyed them most, and others seemed to comment that they liked them. So I have a little comedy to my writing, and I hope to continue this.

It is difficult to tell what my actual style is with 19 hubs published, and I think hub-metrics and google analytics is one of the worst indicators at least at the beginning. What I have learned from the stats is more about readers than my own writing. I have learned that people like topics that are relevant, controversial, and useful.

I had fun trying different topics and styles. So now that I am graduating from prodigy to expert, I must attempt to "grow up" and start getting more focused. I have included a couple writers that I have interacted with over the last couple months. I would love for a little of them to rub off on me. They seem really cool.

A Couple of My Favorite Hubbers

  • Popular and Friendly: jimmythejock with more than 952 fans and a fun writing style is the closest thing to the captain of the HubPages team I can find. He was one of my first fans and his article was the first I ever read on Hubpages. His hubs are useful, welcoming, encouraging, and popular.

  • Reflective Deep Thinker: Storytellsersrus answered one of my requests and blew me away with her answer. She interpreted my request in an unpredictable way, and then posed more questions in her hub than she answered. I am sure she would be a great teacher.  If you request a hub from her, expect to be challenged intellectually.

I wonder at what point one finds their own style. Should I know at 20 hubs, 100, or even 500? Hopefully comments will lead me to how others have found their styles, and give me more directions in my pursuit.

Things I believe make up your HubPages writing style:

  • Topic Choice (Technology, Poetry, Pictures of Indian Girls)
  • General Tone (Positive, Negative, Funny, Introspective)
  • Person (First, Second, Third Person)
  • Popular hubs (Probably some of your better work)
  • Role-Models (Like jimmythejock and Storytellersus)

If you don't already write for HubPages, I invite you to join a really cool community of writers.  Just sign up HERE.

Hooray! Congrats, and all that. Yeah, it took me a while to discover how I wanted to write on these hubs, and which topics would go over well. You have chosen two very good examples to emulate.

Hooray from me too! Cris A and Teresa are both VERY much worth checking out if you haven't already. Time spent reading the styles of different wonderful hubbers is so helpful, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do that. The laughs, the "ah ha" moments, learning, and getting to know people in general has been a true blessing for me.

I could sit and make a list of every person who has inspired me here, but i'm too afraid I'd miss someone because the list is long!

Keep up the great work!

Blake, I am blown away by your recommendation. I cannot begin to describe how this melts me inside. My Hub response to your question flowed out of me because your question inspired me at a deep level. You asked from the heart and so my inclination was to respond as best I could, from my heart. You have achieved in two months what some never achieve and I look forward to reading more of your work. Thank you so very much.

Blake is a positive force of nature. Thank you for helping me as I try to figure out what I want to do on this site as well.
