The Employers Pay to attend the Job Fair to Meet You!

A New Kind of Job Search

In the "old days" perspective employees would search the local newspapers' "Help Wanted Ads", make phone calls and register at the Employment Opportunities Office for available Job Opportunities. Usually, the current job search involves registering Online with EDD, joining a Job Search Website such as Monster.Com, and electronically submitting a cover letter and Resume' to various Corporations through their website or email.

One way to "get your foot in the door" these days is to attend a Job Fair. In fact it may be the only way to personally hand your resume' to an interested employer "face-to-face" as most corporations won't allow "walk-ins" even if you call them ahead. In these troubled times of Homeland Security Protecols, employers are wary of unauthorized persons roaming their facilities. The best way to come into direct contact with large numbers of employers is to make 50 or so copies of your updated resume' and walk through a local Job Fair. Remember to smile and look the employer directly in the eye as you hand him/her your resume'. If you are offered an application or brochure, there is seating and tables nearby for filling out information and reading information. After reading material on the companies that have recruitment and networking booths at the Job Fair, be sure to go back to the booths you are interested in and ask meaningful questions to show the employer you are interested and informed about their company.

Most Job Fairs also having a training and lecture area set up for applicants who want to learn updated strategies on "Making a good first impression", "Writing an accurate but impressive resume'", and "How to make a successful Job Search". You can glean many tidbits of useful information, especially if it has been a long time since you have needed to look for work, or if this is your first time job search.

You will often receive gifts with company logos, literature and a large carry bag with a water bottle from the Job Fair itself. One construction company had miniature hard hats and mini-"cones" likw what you see in the middle of the road at constrution sites! The atmosphere at the Fair is structured to set applicants at ease. There is hand shaking and animated converation, and an overall willingness to spend time with you to share information and talk in a more informal situation than you would find in an interview within the companies' office. As a first step, I recommend getting some practice at interviewing and selling your good working skills at a Job Fair. Do not be shy about approaching people while you are there. The reason they paid for a booth to be at the Fair on that day is to come into contact with people like you. Think of it this way, you are invited to go to the Job Fair for free through newspaper advertisements and Banners, flyers, radio announcements... but the employers have to pay to be there to meet You!<!-- Kontera ContentLink(TM);-->
