I remember a few times looking at my cell phone and just SEETHING with anger as I hung up on a prank caller again ... at 3am ... for the third time! How I wished i knew how to find a cell phone number owner at that point but i thought it was impossible and just weathered the storm because the police said they could do nothing about it.

Little did i know that a few years later i would be working for a private investigations company that made quite a lot of cash doing just this! Your regular phone directories do not have any cell phone numbers on them. They have a reverse search option but they only have is a reverse lookup for residential numbers. This is because it is easy for them to acquire residential numbers because there are public domain meaning that, by law, there is a central authority that collects all the numbers. These numbers can be published because everyone has a right to see these details.

Cell phone numbers on the other hand are not included in this law. With so many companies giving out phone numbers and holding the details of who owns that number this means all this information is not in one place normally.

Now this raises a question for some people which i would like to quickly discuss. Is this legal? Have these sites behaved ethically? What is the deal here!

The answer is YES to both questions.

While cell phone numbers and the details associated with it are not required by law to be divulged they are not protected by law. If you can get this information there is no law that stops you from publishing this information or doing what you want with it as long as that use is not in itself illegal like defaming and so forth.

The companies that run these websites are usually very ethical and purchase these numbers from a range of telephone companies, marketing firms and other places as long as those companies are not breaching their own privacy laws.

This is information ... you could pay a private eye to find out, these sites have just made one part of thier job very easy while being completely legal.
