In New Zealand, divorce is commonly known as dissolution of marriage. A separation of two years is a grounds for a married couple to apply for the court to legally dissolve their union. But apart from the often emotional parting, there are many things that must be considered. On top of everything else, of course, are the children - if there are any. Studies have shown that even if it was clear that a divorce would work towards the best interest of all parties involved, the children would always be terribly affected. Divorce is a rather intricate process and you definitely need legal assistance to inform you of your rights and duties. Matters such as child care or custody and support must also be legally related you. And when you finally decide to go to court to apply for the dissolution order, you need someone who will prepare the necessary documents to back the application.

Ask people you know who have gone through a divorce. They can provide you with the name of their lawyer and tell you more about their legal experience. Tough times like these, you need some sort of a support group to help you weather the emotional storm.

If you don't know anyone who's gotten a divorce, maybe your friends and family know someone who has. Ask them.

If you're employed in a company with an in-house counsel, you can ask him if he knows any lawyer who specializes in divorce law. He surely has a network of lawyers and he can easily give you a name.

If none of the three above applies to you, check the yellow pages. It has listings of lawyers who practice in a particular field.

You can also ask your local bar association for a referral. A bar association is an organization of lawyers in your area. They can help you find a divorce lawyer in your locality.

If all else fails, there is always the internet. Lawyer search sites are all over the web. Simply type the area of expertise you are seeking and the name of your locality and it will immediately give you a list of divorce lawyers with their contact details.

Maybe can check the family court to find lawyers too. After all, those law firms specialising in divorce will appear many times.
