How to Free File Your Tax Return to Receive the Stimulus Rebate

Now that you know you qualify for the rebate the next step is to file a federal tax return, even if your not required to do so.The fastest way to accomplish this is to file a return online. Below I have outlined the steps to get you started.
First, go to the official IRS Website.
Now that you're on the IRS website click on Use Free File to Prepare Your Taxes located in the middle of the page.
You should now see the heading:
Click the Start Now button on the Free File page.
(Or scroll down the page and click on the Free File: Step by Step Instruction to begin)
Once you have clicked on the Start Now Button you should see a list of Tax Preparation websites recommended by the IRS. Each company's website will walk you through their tax preparation program. Be careful as some of the companies have restrictions as to who qualifies for Free Federal Tax Filing.
I went to every Tax Preparation Website listed on the IRS Free File page, and performed a practice tax filing operation for each website.

The Turbo Tax program asks you right away if you are filing only to receive the stimulus rebate. For individuals doing so this makes the process easier and much quicker. Also for those not required to file a return, when the program asks you if you want to file your State Taxes skip this part. For qualified individuals filing a federal tax return to only receive the Stimulus Rebate, you're not required to file a State return to obtain the rebate. All other tax payers need to file their state tax requirements.
