Gate Guard Jobs For RV'ers

How To Make Money As A Gate Guard With Your RV.

Oil and gas companies hire security contractors to sign in vehicles arriving at the main gate of the oil and gas lease. The rancher or farmer may have certain requirements that have to be met such as inspecting the vehicle for weapons, cameras, etc. Depending on the size of the oil company they may hire an established contractor (who you would apply
Your job is not a particularly exciting one, speaking as one who has done the job, but will be a routine that lasts up to a month or more as the well is drilled from start to completion and production.

You will see the same rig workers and company men over and over and have the opportunity to meet some new friends, watch lots of satellite TV and read books. Your spouse will work one shift, it is a very busy well with lots of trucks and traffic, or if it is slow, you both can take turns waking up and signing in vehicles.

Traffic will consist of 18 wheelers hauling mud and water, rig crews coming and going twice a day, salesmen, (who you are encouraged to discourage or refuse entry) company men and service employees. Gate guards are not to ask questions or chit chat about the rig's progress since most exploration wells are "tight holes" or top secret since they could have discovered a valuable find and don't want any information leaking out.

What You Need To Make Money With Your RV As A Gate Guard

You will need a trailer that is roomy enough to live in for long periods of time, at least 30' or longer, preferably a fifth wheel. The oil company may provide a small generator and gas for your power and a septic tank that is emptied weekly as well as a potable water tank. In some cases, as an independent you will have to furnish these things or as an employee of a security contractor they may provide them and all you will have to furnish is the trailer.
There is a lot of gate guarding activity on oil and gas wells that are being drilled in South Texas, a place where RV'ers go anyway to winter.

While there won't be any square dancing or pot luck suppers at your job site, you will earn from $100 to $300 and up per day for spending your there. Not many oilfield security companies advertise for gate guards, nor do many oil companies, large or small, advertise for them. The best way to find who may be hiring is to stop at one of these locations along the roadway and inquire as to who the guard is working for. Most will be friendly and glad to talk to another RV'er.

The best way to start out in the business and begin earning money with your RV is to get on with an established security company. Ask if they are hiring and leave them your resume, references and business cards that you have made up with your names and "Gate Guard For Hire" on them.
Within 200 miles of McAllen Texas, for example, driving down the major and minor farm roads you are likely to see dozens of trailers, parked at ranch gates, with a generator humming. Stop and ask them a few questions and there is a good possibility you can line up a job on a future well that the company has a contract for. If you have any security experience, deputy sheriff, military, etc it is a big plus. Being older and retired is often a plus in the area of credibility and trust.
Other ways to make money with your RV include working as a part time caretaker of an RV park. You can often find ads in the RV magazines and online for "park caretakers wanted". Keep an eye out and talk to park owners as you travel and you just might find a long term free parking spot.
