Why does credit matter when getting a cell phone?

If you have heard horror stories about opening up a cell phone contract and having to pay a hefty deposit, then perhaps you are scared about trying to get a cell phone in your name.  Your credit score and history determine the type of deposit you have to put down to open a cell phone contract.  If your credit score is not the best, you may have to pay anywhere from $50 on up to open up cell phone service.  If this outside your means, you may have to look at alternatives to get a cell phone contract in your name.

How to get a cell phone with no credit

If you have no credit or bad credit, and you need a cell phone contract there are other ways to go about getting one. First, you can have a co-signer help you use their good credit to open up a contract. This requires a level of trust between you and your co-signer. In some cases, you may have to just get someone to open an account in their name and let you know it. However, you should avoid that at all costs. If something goes wrong, you quite possibly could ruin an important relationship in your life over a cell phone contract.

If you opt to see what type of cell phone contract you can get with your credit, you may be able to negotiate the down payment on the deposit over a few months. Not all cell phone companies will let you do this, and it may take some negotiating, but it is worth a shot if you want to go with a cell phone contract through that particular provider.

What can you do if you cannot get a cell phone

If this is not feasible, you can always check out pre-paid or pay as you go cell phones.  While these are not contract cell phones, they will work out until your credit is built or repaired where you can afford to get a regular cell phone.  These are popular alternatives to your traditional cell phone contract.  While they may not offer the services and range you would like, they will still give you the opportunity to take advantage of what a cell phone can do in your life.
