How to Get College Credit Based On Your Work Experience
74Get a College Degree in a Fraction of Normal Time
In a rapidly changing educational environment where people can get degrees online and cross geographical and 9-5 traditional college hours, it is much easier for people to get college degrees in this day and age.
Traditional degrees that require 4-5 years of full time college and that were traditionally for the young, are falling by the wayside. Finally, people who have extensive knowledge and experience in a specific area can actually be awarded experience-based college degrees where a great deal of credits are based on work experience.
It is an exciting opportunity for people who use to have to settle for lesser paying jobs because of a lack of degree even when they had more experience than their college-degreed counterparts, to level the playing field.
Preparing Your Portfolio for Review
Before you apply for a life experience or work experience degree, be sure to get your portfolio in order. This does not need to be a major task, but it needs to be documented and organized.
When professors and evaluators look at your portfolio, they are basically looking at a glorified resume that lists your experience and specific duties and accomplishments over at minimum a 3-5 year period.
If your portfolio passes mustard, then they may ask for some specific documentation of some of your skills and accomplishments.
So what do you want to have ready:
- A list of ALL college course you have taken at any time, and the grade if possible
- A list of any additional courses, continuing education courses, or training seminars that may count for credit
- A list of any self taught courses, accredited or not
- A list relative work experience, including different projects, accomplishments, leadership positions, responsibilities, etc
It really is this simple. Get your portfolio together based on the type of degree you seek whether it is an associates or a doctorates.
Then go to a reputable accredited university that offers credit for work experience and fill out and application.

This seems a little odd. What weight do these degrees carry in the real world of hiring?
