Ever gone to the hairstylist and hated what you came out with? Did you bring pictures, pointing out what you want and don't want and still...ended up with something horrible?

Here's some helpful hints, straight from the hairdresser's mouth on how to get what you want and be happy!

Know What You Want:

What is most important to you? Do you have to have your hair EXACTLY a certain way? Maybe you just want to convey a TYPE of look. Perhaps you want to avoid certain things. Your most important issue may just be the length, color, or a lifestyle choice.

Determine what you find most important and put that into words. "I don't want to lose much length" is different than "I would like my hair to stay passed my shoulders/bra strap". Be specific, but remember to be open to some suggestions by the expert. If you plead your case, rather than demand, your stylist is more likely to understand.

Find an Example:

Do you have an old photo of yourself that shows what you are looking for? A photo of a model or celeb from a magazine?

Find an example of what you are looking for and include options you are open to. Also find pictures or examples of what you do not want, if you are adamant about not ending up with something specific (i.e. heavy bangs, short layers, certain color choices). Make sure the model in the photo has a similar hair texture or type than you, or else you may be asking for something that you can't have.

Be Prepared for Advice:

The reason you are paying for a good stylist is to hear her advice too! Be ready to actually listen to what is being said about why you may not be the best candidate for a certain style or color. And if you both decide to try it anyway, be ready to hear options on how to fix it.

When to be worried:

If you are extremely uncomfortable, feel as if your stylist isn't listening to what you want or isn't able to explain what she'll be doing and why-maybe you should leave. Be polite about your feelings and ask more questions. If she is frustrated with you or is rude, that is not someone to trust! Be sure you are happy with the person you will be entrusting your look to. A great stylist can sense your feelings and will want to help ease any worry or concern. Keep that in mind.

What About the Cost?

Not all great stylists are expensive. Check the local salons in your area to determine the average price of a decent hairstyle in your town. Decide on a realistic budget. When working with your stylist, be honest about the situation, she can help you work within your budget and give suggestions to help keep your costs comfortable. Be polite about it when saying, " I am limited on my hair budget, what can we do within my limits?"

To sum it up, having an open and understanding relationship with the person who will give you your new hairstyle is as important as the hairstyle itself. Try to ask people you see with great hair who they go to and get that phone number.

Always remember-a great stylist will take good care of your hair because it's the most important thing you wear!
